POSITION SUMMARY:   

Reporting to the Senior Accountant, the Accountant provides valuable insight to our business partners by delivering timely and accurate financial information, building trust that fosters collaborative relationships, and anticipating and responding to the needs of the Academy. The position will participate in various areas of the accounting process including accounts receivable, month-end close, regulatory filings, and financial statement reporting.

The position is a hybrid of on-site and remote work from home in CA and can change as business needs warrant. The candidate must easily be able to work onsite in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco when needed. Candidates are required to have up-to-date COVID-19 vaccination, including receiving a booster shot, as a condition of employment, absent qualifying exemptions in accordance with applicable laws. Individuals receiving a conditional offer of employment from the California Academy of Sciences will be provided the full text of the vaccination policy.

POSITION DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Close Process
    • Record moderate to complex journal entries timely and prepare supporting schedules to ensure a document audit trail for all journal entries.
    • Analyze moderate to complex financial statement line items to include variances as compared to budget and trend.
    • Prepare supporting schedules for quarterly and annual financial statements.
  • Account Reconciliations
    • Prepare moderate to high risk balance sheet reconciliations and flux analyses and ensure that any reconciliation items are resolved or cleared in a timely manner.
  • Revenue / Receivables
    • Provide oversight of the billing process prepared by the Operational Accounting team to ensure that billings are accurate and completely timely
    • Interface with internal and external business partners to resolve issues in a timely manner.
    • Respond effectively to customer inquiries in a timely fashion. Communicate all issues and/or disputes to their supervisor and operating departments
    • Review aging schedules and prepare analysis to determine if write-offs are deemed necessary.
  • Projects
    • Review and recommend improvements to streamline internal controls and key business processes.
    • Participate in the documentation of accounting process narratives.
  • Audit Support
    • Independently prepare working papers to include supporting documentation for audit support.
  • Other
    • Assist Procurement team with vendor set up
    • Develop working relationships with fellow team members and serve as the first point of contact for business partners
    • Conduct technical accounting research with assistance from supervisor
    • Attend to ad-hoc requests
    • Work required overtime during the close process, as well as to meet project deadlines
    • Follow all Academy safety regulations
    • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:
The qualifications listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required or preferred.

EXPERIENCE and/or EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business with a major in Accounting preferred, working toward passing the CPA exam
  • 2+ years of relevant accounting experience

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Intermediate knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • Intermediate knowledge of Excel
  • Excellent verbal and written communications. Able to effectively communicate with staff, management, and outside contacts in a cooperative and professional manner.
  • Must work effectively in a team environment
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion
  • Ability to transport 50 lbs.

While this position would normally be expected to work onsite in the Academy offices with the Accounting team, under current operations, the position is expected to be primarily remote through June 2022.
