Description:

The Justice and Diversity Center of the Bar Association of San Francisco (JDC) is hiring an immigration attorney with experience in removal defense to join our Immigrant Legal Defense Program (ILDP) as a Supervising Attorney. The Attorney will be working in partnership with the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) in providing legal support, coordination, intake, referrals and other services to SFUSD students and their families.


This is a hybrid role that requires a minimum of 2 days in person at the BASF office per week, and approximately 1 day per week at various SFUSD schools and district offices. Your presence may be required for other matters such as court appearances in San Francisco and Concord immigration courts or other essential meetings.



Essential Job Functions:

  • Perform initial screening and intake for SFUSD students and their family members to assess their needs and provide appropriate referrals for legal and social services.
  • Provide individualized legal consultations for SFUSD students and their families, which will include Know Your Rights information, identifying eligibility for relief, giving legal advisals, and making targeted referrals for full scope representation.
  • Provide court accompaniment for SFUSD students and their families through JDC's Attorney of the Day program.
  • Provide limited scope legal services for SFUSD students and their families while they are waiting to be placed with an attorney for full scope representation. Services will include, but are not limited to: work permit applications, asylum application filing, motions to reopen, motions to terminate, motions to continue, motions to change venue, FOIA requests, U visas, T visas, and change of address requests.
  • Organize and coordinate clinics, Know Your Rights Presentations and legal orientations for SFUSD students and their families.
  • Coordinate with SFUSD staff and social workers to assess the legal needs of the newcomer student population and tailor services accordingly.
  • Develop community-facing materials to assist SFUSD students and their families in navigating the immigration process.
  • Provide full scope representation for a limited number of SFUSD students and their family members before the San Francisco Immigration Court and USCIS.
  • Provide representation before the California Superior Court for a limited number of SFUSD students who are eligible for Special Immigrant Juvenile Status.
  • Maintain accurate and timely records in JDC's case management systems to comply with grant reporting requirements.
  • Supervise two Legal Services Coordinators housed at JDC. Supervision will include training new staff on how to prepare and file applications for various forms of relief.
  • Recruit, train and support pro bono volunteers.
  • Other programmatic work as needed to support the ILDP and JDC



Additional Job Functions:

  • Ability to travel to SFUSD schools and provide services on site.
  • Represent JDC in community spaces and coordinate with existing partners to identify and develop new resources for SFUSD students and their families.
  • Participate in the San Francisco Rapid Response Network as an on-call attorney responder



Working Conditions:

Responsibilities will be performed at BASF's office located in downtown San Francisco, during normal business hours, which are Monday through Friday, from 9:00am to 5:00pm; and at various SFUSD schools to provide services on site, approximately 4 times per month. This position also requires heavy telephone and computer use.



Education:

  • JD from an accredited law school
  • California license to practice law



Experience:

  • 5+ years practicing immigration law with experience handling cases in removal proceedings.
  • Familiarity with Asylum, Special Immigrant Juvenile Status, TPS and DACA.
  • At least one year of experience in a supervisory role.



Prerequisite Skills and Requirements

  • Oral and written fluency in English and Spanish highly desired. Proficiency in other languages is also a plus.
  • Ability to work with individuals from diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds in a culturally competent manner.



Skills and Qualifications

  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint), familiarity with Google Suite
