This is a hybrid role. Office attendance is required at least twice a week for collaboration and connection. There may be additional in-office days for team or company events.

The Role

Ironclad is hiring a Legal Engineer to join our product team and serve as the bridge between legal expertise and product development. The ideal candidate is a commercially minded lawyer with experience in working closely with product and engineering teams and is excited to translate how lawyers think about contracts into structured, scalable product logic.

This role will sit in the Product team and report directly to the Head of AI Product.

What You'll Do:

  • Act as the legal voice within the product team, ensuring outputs reflect real-world legal expectations
  • Translate commercial legal concepts into product requirements, workflows, and system logic
  • Partner closely with engineering to design, implement, and iterate on product features
  • Ensure the product aligns with how in-house legal teams review and negotiate contracts
  • Focus on commercial agreements, including NDAs, MSAs, and broader contracting workflows
  • Design and oversee labeling, annotation, and evaluation workflows
  • Ensure product outputs meet standards for accuracy, usability, and legal quality
  • Build structured datasets that improve product performance over time
  • Lead a team of contractors supporting labeling and product workflows
  • Help define hiring needs and build out the legal engineering function over time
  • Collaborate across product, engineering, and legal stakeholders; own projects end-to-end, from concept through execution
  • Communicate clearly between technical and non-technical teams
  • Participate in customer and internal feedback loops to continuously improve the product

Qualifications

  • J.D. and an active license (or equivalent)
  • 6+ years of corporate/commercial legal experience (strong preference for in-house)
  • Deep experience with commercial contracts, including NDAs, MSAs, and vendor/customer agreements
  • Experience working with or alongside product and engineering teams
  • Demonstrated ability to translate legal reasoning into structured, repeatable systems or workflows
  • Strong communication skills across both legal and technical audiences
  • Key Skills & Attributes
  • Commercially minded, with a strong understanding of business outcomes and tradeoffs
  • Product-oriented, with the ability to think in systems, workflows, and scalability
  • Technically fluent and comfortable working closely with engineers
  • Builder mentality, with excitement for creating processes, infrastructure, and teams from scratch
  • Strong communicator, able to bridge legal and technical worlds seamlessly
  • Proactive and "offensive-minded," with a willingness to take ownership and push ideas forward

Why This Role Matters

  • This role sits at the core of Ironclad's product team, not on the sidelines, giving you direct influence over how AI handles real-world commercial legal work. You'll play a critical role in shaping the systems, standards, and team behind legal engineering at Ironclad, while operating at the intersection of law, product, and AI to drive meaningful impact across the platform.
