Description:

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the Quantitative Biosciences Institute (QBI) at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) serves as the Institute's senior administrative and operational leader and principal partner to the Institute Director. The COO provides strategic and operational leadership across all administrative, financial, and operational functions, ensuring effective execution of QBI's research, translational, educational, and strategic initiatives.

Reporting to the Institute Director for programmatic matters and with a dotted-line reporting relationship to theVice Dean of Finance and Administration in the UCSF School of Pharmacy, the COO plays a critical role in providing structure, continuity, and operational rigor within a complex and evolving academic research environment.

May require travel (~15-20% of the time) to scientific events and discussions


The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $144,200 - $350,000 (Annual Rate).

Required Qualifications:

  • Terminal degree in a related area (PhD, JD, MD, etc.) and / or equivalent experience / training required
  • Minimum 8 years of related experience
  • Minimum 7 years of experience as lead/supervisor/manager, demonstrated leadership of scientific and administrative operations in an academic research or industry organization
  • Management experience in academic and / or government agencies, or leadership in biopharma
  • Academic or research background and recognized expertise in selected area
  • Executive business management experience and contract negotiation skills
  • Strong negotiation skills and verbal and written communication skills; ability to influence / persuade all levels of staff
  • Skills in organization and customer service to effectively manage multiple important priorities

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong fundraising experience
  • Academic background and recognized expertise in multiple disciplines of research
  • Demonstrated expertise with program building within a leading academic institution and administrative, budgetary, human resources and financial principles and practices
  • Expert ability to work with dynamic and diverse group of faculty, staff and students
  • Ability to manage collaborations between academia, industrial and / or governmental agencies
