Legal Assistant to Managing Partner

2026-04-22     DeLacey, Riebel & Shindell (San Francisco, CA)     San Francisco,CA
Description:

ABOUT THE FIRM

DeLacey, Riebel & Shindell, LLP is a boutique family law firm serving high-net-worth clients navigating complex dissolution matters. Our work is sophisticated, high-stakes, and deeply human. We bring precision and empathy to every matter, and we hold ourselves to a high standard across every function of the firm.

At DRS, you will find:

  • A firm that takes both client service and team culture seriously
  • Sophisticated, substantive work that requires judgment, not just execution
  • Colleagues who genuinely invest in each other
  • A hybrid environment that trusts you to manage your time and deliver results

What you will not find:

  • A slow or repetitive environment
  • Micromanagement of your day-to-day work

ABOUT THE ROLE

This role supports one of our Managing Partners and serves as the operational center of gravity for a seven-person practice group, one Partner, four attorneys, and two paralegals.

The Partner you'll be supporting is a highly effective, deeply focused attorney who leads with action and communicates with intention. He does not manage by daily check-in. He expects the people around him to read the field, make good decisions, and keep things moving without waiting to be directed. If you need to be told what to do next, this role is not a fit. If you thrive when given ownership and latitude, then you will likely thrive here.

This is not a role where you maintain existing systems. It is a role where you look at how things are working, identify what could be working better, and take the initiative to improve it. Processes here are functional but not fully optimized. We are looking for someone who will observe, ask questions, gather input from the team, and propose improvements that make the whole practice run more smoothly, then see those improvements through.

This role is centered on inbox management, calendar ownership, and ensuring that communication across a high-volume practice is triaged intelligently and followed through consistently. The inbox moves fast. Attorneys, clients, opposing counsel, and experts are all coming in simultaneously. Your judgment about what is urgent, what can wait, and what needs to be escalated is critical.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Managing the Partner's high-volume inbox, including triage, routing, drafting, and follow-up
  • Owning the calendar end-to-end, scheduling, protecting time, building in buffers, flagging conflicts before they become problems
  • Serving as the communication hub for the practice group, keeping attorneys and paralegals informed and on track
  • Tracking open tasks and commitments across the team and following through until they are closed
  • Preparing the Partner for hearings, meetings, depositions, and key deadlines, logistics confirmed, team looped in, nothing left to chance
  • Observing workflows across the team, identifying friction points, and proposing practical improvements
  • Supporting special projects and taking on expanded responsibilities as the role evolves

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Required: Minimum 5 years of experience in a legal environment, law firm, legal department, or similar. You must understand how a legal practice operates: the urgency hierarchy of deadlines, the client communication standards, and the culture of accountability that legal work demands.
  • Prior experience supporting a senior partner, managing partner, or executive in a deadline-intensive environment
  • Demonstrated track record of operating independently, not just executing tasks, but managing a practice, anticipating needs, and solving problems before they escalate
  • Experience identifying process gaps and seeing improvements through from idea to implementation

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

The right person for this role:

  • Acts first, informs second, sends the calendar hold, drafts the email, books the logistics, then lets the Partner know it's done
  • Reads between the lines. When direction is minimal, they fill in the gaps with good judgment, not guesswork
  • Sees the practice as a system and looks for ways to make it run better, not because they were asked to, but because it's how they're wired
  • Brings a steady, professional presence that doesn't require external validation to stay motivated
  • Knows the difference between a legal emergency and a routine matter, and responds accordingly
  • Circles back. Remembers the open thread from three weeks ago and follows up without being reminded

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

Competitive salary commensurate with experience. Benefits include medical, dental, and vision coverage, monthly wellness stipend, commuter benefits, retirement benefits, profit sharing, firm-paid life and disability insurance, and paid time off.

If you are energized by ownership, comfortable with ambiguity, and ready to make a meaningful impact on a high-performing practice, we would love to hear from you.
