Description:

About the job Remote | PhD-Level Computational Biologists - $60-$85/hour

We are sharing a specialised part-time consulting opportunity for expert bioinformaticians and computational biologists with strong tool ecosystem knowledge, deep domain expertise, and the ability to make precise toolkit selection judgments across complex computational biology workflows.

This role supports an exciting collaboration with one of the world's leading AI labs focused on improving how frontier models approach real scientific problems through high-quality toolkit specification and validation in computational biology.

Selected professionals will review representative computational biology problems, specify complete bioinformatics toolkits for assigned problem classes, validate final tool selections, and help improve overall model quality. This opportunity is especially well-suited to highly analytical professionals who are comfortable evaluating bioinformatics workflows, selecting the right tool stack for a problem before execution begins, and applying strong judgment across specialised research domains.

Key Responsibilities

Professionals in this role may contribute to:

Toolkit Specification & Validation
Specify the complete set of bioinformatics tools needed to solve assigned classes of computational biology problems
Validate final toolkit selections against representative problems
Help ensure that selected tools reflect strong technical judgment, completeness, and practical relevance

Problem Class Review & Workflow Understanding
Review representative problems from assigned problem classes to understand data shape and expected output
Apply domain expertise to assess which tools are most appropriate for each workflow
Help ensure that toolkit choices align with real-world scientific use cases

Bioinformatics Tool Selection Support
Recommend Python and R packages, system tools, and related workflow components with brief rationale
Contribute expertise across specialised subdomains within computational biology
Help improve model quality through careful selection of robust, high-value scientific tools

Ideal Profile

Strong candidates may have:
A PhD or Master's degree in bioinformatics, computational biology, genomics, or a closely related field
Hands-on experience with at least 3 of the following: protein structure analysis, variant effect prediction, RNA-seq or expression analysis, ChIP-seq or epigenomics, single-cell analysis, CRISPR screen analysis, molecular docking, or cheminformatics
Deep familiarity with the standard tool ecosystem for their subdomain
Proficiency in Python and/or R for bioinformatics workflows
Familiarity with command-line bioinformatics tools such as samtools, BEDTools, and BLAST

Preferred qualifications

Strong opinions on tool selection and workflow design
Ability to identify the right toolkit for a problem before execution begins
Comfort working across specialised scientific problem classes with minimal supervision
High attention to detail and strong consistency in technical evaluation tasks

Why This Opportunity

Contribute specialised computational biology expertise to a cutting-edge AI collaboration
Help shape how frontier AI models approach real scientific problems
Work on high-impact toolkit curation tasks with strong research relevance
Flexible remote work with competitive hourly compensation

Contract Details

Independent contractor role
Fully remote with flexible scheduling
