Contra Costa Civic Theatre (CCCT) in El Cerrito, California, is a successful nonprofit community theatre established in 1960. CCCT produces a season of plays and musicals along with year-round children's classes and camps. As we plan our 67th season, we are hiring a Managing Director to lead the overall financial, administrative and business needs for CCCT.

The Managing Director (Director) is appointed by the Board of Directors, reports to the Board President and works closely with the Education Director, Artistic Advisory Committee and other theatre staff. The Director is an experienced and energetic leader, responsible for maintaining an effective team internally, supporting the artistic and educational vision of the company, promoting CCCT to our patrons and extended community, and cultivating effective relationships throughout the organization and our local and regional community.

This is a full-time, salaried position, with occasional evening and/or weekend availability.

Responsibilities

Financial Management

• Create and oversee the annual budget in collaboration with the Treasurer, Education Director and Artistic Advisory Committee.
• Develop budget updates for the Treasurer with realistic, quantifiable revenue and expense projections, at pre-determined deadlines.
• Provide direct oversight of day-to-day financial and business operations in consultation with theatre staff and Treasurer.
• Work with the Treasurer and Board to maintain appropriate financial controls.
• Collaborate with and meet regularly with the Board and Finance Committee to discuss financial status, communicate variances from projections, and seek approval for changes when necessary.

Strategic Planning & Coordination

• Maintain the master calendar with input from the Artistic Advisory Committee and Education Director.
• Lead and oversee marketing plans, including social media and industry services and other media for season and youth productions and programs, including summer drama camp.
• Meet regularly with the Education staff, Board designees and other theater staff.
• Serve as an ex officio member of the Artistic Advisory Committee.
• Meet with consultants as needed.
• Create effective strategies for maximizing contributed revenue, including fundraising appeals.
• Provide expertise and support to the Board in the planning and organizing of special events.
• Ensure that production calendars for youth and mainstage shows are incorporated into the master calendar.

Board & Community Relations

• Attend Board Meetings.
• Serve as liaison between the Board and staff.
• Community Relations: Serve as a spokesperson, along with the Board President, for the organization to CCCT patrons and extended community.
• Develop and maintain positive working relationships with outside vendors and contractors, in consultation with the Board of Directors.
• Prepare and draft board reports for meetings as needed.
• Oversee company recordkeeping.

Contracts & Relationships

• Handle all licensing and contract negotiations with theatrical licensing companies in conjunction with the Artistic Advisory Committee and Education Director.
• Cultivate and maintain positive relationships with the City of El Cerrito, El Cerrito Arts and Culture Commission and Chamber of Commerce regarding community, neighborhood, and civic engagement issues.
• Maintain strong relationships with Theatre Bay Area and other Bay Area Theatre leaders.

Legal & Administrative

• Supervise theatre administrative staff and consultants.
• Office Management: Oversee administrative operations of the theatre and office.
• Serve as company representative for insurance, workers' compensation, IRS, EDD, etc., as directed by the Board.
• Oversee HR functions and administration, including payroll, insurance and Personnel Policy Manual revisions and updates.

Facilities & Patron Services

CCCT operates in a City-owned building.

• Oversee and prioritize maintenance of the physical plant. Communicate building maintenance and repair needs to the Board, staff & volunteers.
• Oversee patron services and front-of-house patron experience.
• Oversee event ticketing and CRM (Customer Relationship Management) software.
• Coordinate volunteers.

Experience

The ideal candidate will have:

• A commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
• Bachelor's degree and a minimum of five years of experience as a director/leader with a broad base of understanding in theatre production and/or nonprofit organization.
• Experience working collaboratively with paid staff, a Board of Directors, community volunteers and other stakeholders.
• Excellent communication skills and ability to thrive in a community-based and primarily volunteer organization.
• Comfort with administering online platforms and services.
• Preferred experience:
• Experience negotiating and acting as a mediator in artistic and technical discussions.
• Experience acquiring production rights.
• Experience with children's arts education programs.
• Experience with enterprise software.
