Under the general supervision of the Executive Director of Student Nutrition Services (SNS), the Child Nutrition Programs Manager is responsible for ensuring SNS's processes and practices are aligned with state, federal, and local guidelines for all Child Nutrition Programs, for expanding the number and type of meal service programs available to students, and aligning all meal services available in SFUSD. This employee makes decisions which impact the daily operations and implementation of established procedures and policies related to the Child Nutrition Programs within SFUSD, helps monitor expenditures and financial reporting, and solves problems requiring analyses of issues.
The employee will receive general direction from the Executive Director of SNS and directly supervises SNS personnel including, but not limited to, supervisors, support staff, and other school nutrition personnel. This employee has strong working relationships with the Culinary Manager, Operations Manager, and the Business Manager in SNS, and together they assist with program planning and the identification of future resource needs. Travel to multiple sites may be required in order to properly inspect operations of selected kitchens.
Essential Duties
The duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to the job code/class and are not intended to be an inclusive or exhaustive list.
As the Child Nutrition Programs Manager,you will:
• Analyze pending legislation and determine the potential impact on SFUSD's meal programs; develop materials to communicate guidelines and/or changes to SNS staff, central office management, and school staff.
• Analyze federal and state meal program regulations; determine the cost of implementing/managing/expanding meal programs; ensure compliance and accountability with all meal program regulations; direct and monitor meal claim and reimbursement procedures; monitor orders to minimize waste.
• Develop and provide training to SNS staff and school/program staff who provide direct support in the meal programs on all matters related to compliance, reporting, procedures, and documentation related to Child Nutrition Programs.
• Supervise menu planning activities to ensure meal program compliance and food budgets
• Coordinate special meal accommodation for students with food allergies and/or disability that require food substitution. Maintain all menu documentation as needed for Administrative Review.
• Monitor the work of and coach direct reports to improve performance; select, train and evaluate staff.
• Evaluate current procedures, identify and analyze problems and issues, and help implement and document new procedures to promote good eating habits; perform regular site reviews; set up and maintain detailed files, reports, and related technical information according to local, state, and federal guidelines.
• Act as liaison between SNS and community-based organizations to set up afterschool and summer meal programs at eligible school sites.
• Help implement SFUSD's Future Dining Experience, SFUSD's plan to provide a dining experience that captures our students' senses, supports them in their growth, connects them to their food, and enables them to share their opinions.
• Communicate and collaborate with the California Department of Education during annual updates, Administrative Reviews, and as needed throughout the year as program changes are made.
The strongest candidates will have:
• Valid registration as a Registered Dietitian
• Food Handler Safety Certificate
• A valid CA driver's license
• A Food Handler Training Certificate or a Food Service Manager training certificate
• Knowledge of San Francisco's public schools/urban public schools and a passionate belief in SFUSD's commitment to instructional leadership as a lever toward delivering on the SFUSD Graduate Profile
• Strong analytics and systems thinking necessary to interpret data to inform goals and strategy, as well as build infrastructure where none exists
• Ability to work effectively across multiple functions and roles within a complex organization
• A proven record of effectively planning, organizing and using resources to take action and achieve goals
• The ability to learn quickly and adapt as needed in a fast-paced environment
• Outstanding organizational skills and exceptional attention to detail
• A flexible, "can do" work ethic with a focus on identifying challenges and proactively working to find solutions while maintaining a bigger picture lens and focus on what can be delivered instead of what cannot be done
• Excellent data analysis skills and experience synthesizing data to drive action steps
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build effective working relationships with senior level district staff and colleagues
• Effective written and verbal communication and the ability to clearly communicate complex, bureaucratic processes to a variety of audiences
• Ability to define and implement effective HR business practices
• Ability to work effectively in difficult situations that involve confidential and sensitive matters
• Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and GSuite (Google Docs, Slides, Sheets, Forms)
Minimum Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, with major course work in home economics, nutrition, hotel and restaurant management, business administration, or some closely related field
• Two (2) years of verifiable progressively responsible supervisory experience within the food service industry
Substitution: Education requirement may be substituted for additional professional-level experience on a year-for-year basis.
