Summary

Run8 Patent Group is seeking a partner-level patent agent to join the firm with the intention of building a long-term, high-impact practice inside Run8.

This role is for someone who cares deeply about doing excellent work, values ethical decision-making, and wants to build enduring relationships with thoughtful engineers, founders, and investors. We work with people who are trying to make the world better through technology, and we take that responsibility seriously.

Run8 is owned and operated exclusively by patent agents. We do not employ attorneys, and we believe this structure allows us to produce better work, create more autonomy, and remove artificial hierarchies that limit growth in traditional law firm environments.

The Partner Path (Long-Term)

This is a long-horizon role designed for someone who wants to grow into a true partner—professionally, intellectually, and operationally.

Years 1–2: Drafting Excellence

  • Learn and internalize the Run8 approach to patent drafting and prosecution
  • Develop mastery over claim construction, examiner engagement, and quality control
  • Build technical and procedural intuition across a wide range of technologies

Years 3–4: Strategic Depth

  • Design and execute patent strategies for growing startup portfolios
  • Advise founders and technical leaders on how IP fits into product, fundraising, and long-term vision
  • Take increasing ownership over client relationships

Years 5–6: Team Development

  • Mentor and manage patent agents
  • Build internal processes that maintain Run8's quality standards at scale
  • Begin operating a small group within the firm

Years 7–10: Practice Leadership

  • Lead a group of 3–4 patent agents
  • Support ~150–200 companies
  • Build a durable, values-aligned practice generating approximately $5M in annual revenue

Responsibilities

  • Draft and prosecute high-quality patent applications across complex technologies
  • Design thoughtful, principled patent strategies aligned with client goals
  • Mentor and support junior patent agents
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with founders, engineers, and investors
  • Leverage professional networks to bring aligned, venture-backed startups to Run8

Required Qualifications

• Registered Patent Agent before the USPTO (absolutely no attorneys

• Meaningful experience mentoring, teaching, or managing people – university teaching assistant experience is strongly preferred

• Demonstrated ability to reason through complex, multi-stakeholder problems in real-time

• Hands-on experience building technical solutions for customers

• A strong professional network and a genuine commitment to relationship-driven growth

• An impeccable sense of ethics and professional responsibility

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Experience

  • Prior technical or engineering role
  • Experience working at or with startups

Compensation

Compensation grows with responsibility, impact, and contribution—without artificial ceilings imposed by traditional law-firm hierarchies.

Indicative progression (including revenue sharing):

  • Year 1: ~$150k
  • Year 2: ~$220k
  • Year 3: ~$300k
  • Year 10: ~$800k+
