HOUSEKEEPER/LAUNDRY ATTENDANT

The Housekeeper/Laundry Attendant role assumes responsibility and accountability for the day-to-day cleaning and sanitizing of the physical environment in accordance with established schedules and DSS requirements. Additionally, this position is responsible for collecting, sorting, washing, drying, folding, and distributing resident clothing and linens within a Residential Care Facility for the Elderly (RCFE), ensuring proper care of delicate items and maintaining a clean and sanitary laundry area by following established procedures and safety guidelines. The Laundry Attendant will operate commercial laundry and steam cleaning equipment such as washers and dryers. There may also be responsibility of maintaining laundry equipment and other duties around the facility.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Clean resident rooms and bathrooms daily in accordance with facility procedures.
  • Treat all residents with dignity and respect, and maintain privacy and confidentiality when performing duties in resident care areas.
  • Make beds daily and change bed linens weekly, as assigned.
  • Clean common areas of the facility daily, according to the schedule.
  • Secure cleaning chemicals in locked housekeeping cart or closet unless in immediate possession and use.
  • Utilize chemicals safely and in accordance with the manufacturers' directions per the material safety data sheet
  • Practice safety policies and procedures of the department and facility.
  • Utilize proper infection control techniques, including hand washing and use of personal protective equipment while completing cleaning assignments.
  • Promptly report any needed repairs to supervisor.
  • Assist supervisor with weekly and monthly major housekeeping tasks as requested.
  • Ability to interact effectively, be courteous, considerate, and cooperative when communicating with all facility personnel, residents and public.
  • Attend in-service education and staff meetings as required.
  • React appropriately to emergencies and disaster situations.
  • Gather soiled laundry from resident rooms, identifying special care items and sorting based on fabric type, color, and washing instructions.
  • Load and unload commercial washing machines and dryers, setting appropriate water temperature, cycle, and detergent levels according to facility guidelines.
  • Apply stain removers to targeted areas on clothing as needed.
  • Properly fold and stack clean laundry, ensuring items are ready for distribution to residents.
  • Deliver clean laundry to designated resident rooms or linen closets
  • Ensure laundry items are appropriately labeled
  • Keep the laundry room clean and organized, including wiping down equipment, sweeping floors, and disposing of trash.
  • Monitor laundry supplies like detergent, fabric softener, and dryer sheets, notifying the supervisor when stock is low.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols related to housekeeping and laundry operations, including proper handling of chemicals and equipment.
  • Interact with residents in a respectful and courteous manner, addressing any concerns regarding their laundry.
  • Utilize proper infection control techniques, including hand washing and use of personal protective equipment
  • Utilize chemicals safely and in accordance with the manufacturers instructions and material safety data sheet (MSDS)
  • Successfully complete training requirements required by the Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division, Residential Care Facility for the Elderly Regulations and NEMS Assisted Living in a timely manner
  • Performs other job duties as required by manager/supervisor.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Housekeeping experience in long term care or other institutional setting preferred.
  • Experience in working with the elderly, preferred.
  • Must maintain current First Aid certification
  • Must maintain current CPR or BLS certification
  • Ability to receive and maintain a California Background Clearance through the Department of Social Services.
  • Good physical and mental health.
  • Maintain a well-groomed professional appearance.
  • Effective use of interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and/or verbal directions.
  • Ability to establish and carry out priorities within established time frame.
  • Dependable, thorough and accountable.
  • Physical ability to spend extended periods of time on their feet.
  • Displays good judgment and problem solving.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule including nights, weekends and holidays.

LANGUAGE:
  • Must be able to fluently speak, read and write English.
  • Fluent in Chinese (Cantonese and/or Mandarin) preferred
  • Fluency in other languages are an asset.
The Department of Social Services (DSS) licensing agency requires the taking of fingerprints and an affidavit on criminal convictions be submitted for the purpose of conducting a criminal record review. The Department of Social Services will issue an approval or denial according to the criminal clearance reports. An approval must be obtained prior to being present in the facility.

STATUS:
  • This is a Fair Labor Standards Act Non-exempt position.
  • This is not an Occupational Safety and Health Administration high-risk position.
