Position Title: Community Safety Liaison

FLSA: Non-Exempt, Full-Time

Pay Range: $30.00/hour with full benefits

Schedule: 40 hours/week | Monday - Friday, some nights and weekends depending on schedule

Location: 100% In-Person, on-site in San Francisco, CA

Mission:

Booker T. Washington Community Service Center (BTWCSC) is one of the Bay Area's oldest Black-led, Black-serving nonprofit organizations with a century of service to San Francisco. A beacon of Black joy and self-determination, we have nurtured over five generations of Black San Franciscans. We stand embedded as an anchor institution, fostering intergenerational bonds and working in solidarity with allied communities to reform and reimagine a more inclusive San Francisco. We prioritize serving the Black community and welcome all from all cultures and ages 0-99 who walk through our door. We are one of the few urban spaces where anyone in the community can access comprehensive services, from a hot meal to childcare to academic support to senior services.

Summary:

As directed by the BTWCSC Operations and Facilities Director, Community Safety Liaison is responsible for ensuring the safety, security, and well-being of all individuals and property at BTWCSC. The Security Personnel will monitor entrances and exits, perform scheduled patrols, address safety concerns in a timely and professional manner, and assist with emergency preparedness and incident response.

Responsibilities:

  • Support the Operations and Facilities Director in implementing safety and security protocols daily.
  • Conduct regular property patrols, including indoor and outdoor areas, to ensure a safe environment.
  • Monitor entrances and exits to ensure only authorized individuals enter the premises.
  • Maintain accurate logs of daily activities, incidents, and unusual occurrences.
  • Collaborate with staff to ensure the security of events and rentals hosted at the facility.
  • Respond promptly and professionally to security incidents and emergencies.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining emergency evacuation and response procedures.
  • Work with JSCO property management to support resident and guest safety.
  • Serve as a point of contact for tenant partners, clients and guests regarding building access and safety protocols.
  • Support the safety and functionality of high-use areas such as the lobby, gymnasium and multipurpose spaces.
  • Attend required staff meetings, training, and events.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support the safety and security of BTWCSC.
Qualifications and Skills Required:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in a security or safety-related role, preferably in a community center, residential facility, or nonprofit environment.
  • Completion of Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Training (e.g., CPI or equivalent) or willingness to complete within 60 days of hire.
  • Strong interpersonal and verbal de-escalation skills; ability to engage respectfully and effectively with individuals in crisis or under stress.
  • Demonstrated ability to remain calm, composed, and professional in high-pressure or emergency situations.
  • Must exercise sound judgment, maintain confidentiality, and demonstrate a high level of integrity and emotional maturity.
  • Familiarity with basic safety, security, and emergency response protocols.
  • Current CPR/First Aid certification required (or must be obtained within 30 days of hire).
  • Must abstain from the use of illicit drugs and alcohol before or during work hours.
  • A valid driver's license and a clean driving record are preferred.
  • Basic proficiency in using computers and security systems, and ability to complete clear and accurate incident reports and security logs.
  • Ability to walk, stand, or patrol for extended periods and respond quickly to incidents on-site.
  • Strong commitment to working effectively with diverse populations, including youth, seniors, unhoused individuals, and program participants.
  • Ability to collaborate respectfully with community members, staff, volunteers, and external partners.
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to stand or walk for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 45 pounds.
  • Ability to navigate stairs and respond quickly to emergencies.
Schedule:
  • 5 days per week, in-person
  • Some nights and weekends are required, depending on events and program activities.
  • Additional hours required for staff events, evening duties, emergency response, and security coverage as needed.
