Description:

Director / VP, Corporate Strategy & Finance

Strategic Finance • Pricing • Contracts • Program Economics

Location: Oakland, CA (Hybrid, 3 days/week preferred) | Reports to: Owner / CEO & CFO | Type: Full-Time

About The Company

Our client is a product development and global sourcing company that creates custom private label food programs for leading retailers across North America. Unlike traditional private label suppliers that sell existing "white label" products, Sabre works with retailers to develop products from the ground up. Our team includes professionals with culinary and food science backgrounds who collaborate directly with retail partners to create unique recipes, flavors, and product concepts designed specifically for their customers.

These products help retailers build exclusive assortments that customers can only find in their stores, strengthening customer loyalty and differentiation. They work with a global network of manufacturing partners to bring these products to market through structured sourcing, production, and logistics programs. Retail partners include Walmart, Amazon, Whole Foods Market, Kroger, Aldi, Sprouts Farmers Market and others.

Across their product development and brokerage activities, the company supports nearly $200 million in annual retail programs through product innovation, global sourcing, and supply chain execution.

They operate at the intersection of product innovation, global sourcing, and retail partnerships, creating unique commercial and financial complexity.

This compnay is a privately held, family-owned business. The culture is high-trust, high-autonomy, and relationship-driven. This is not a corporate environment — it is a business that rewards smart, hungry leaders who take ownership and drive results.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a VP of Strategy & Finance to serve as a core member of the company's leadership team and help guide the next phase of growth.

This role sits at the center of the business, helping leadership evaluate opportunities, structure supplier partnerships, manage financial exposure across global programs, and build the financial systems needed to support a growing company.

As part of the core leadership team, you will work directly with the company owner, CFO, and Director of Operations to evaluate opportunities, guide financial strategy, and solve the company's most important challenges. The role offers the opportunity to help shape the financial and strategic direction of the business while building the systems and processes that support continued growth.

This is a rare chance to step into a senior leadership role at a profitable, cash-generating, fast-growing business — with a path to becoming part of the ownership-level leadership team as the company scales.

What You Will Own

  1. Pricing & Program Economics

Their profitability depends on pricing programs correctly — accounting for supplier costs, freight, tariffs, FX exposure, and margin targets across a complex global supply chain.

  • Develop and maintain pricing and financial models across all supplier programs for both business units
  • Track and incorporate changes in freight, tariffs, FX markets, and raw material costs in real time
  • Provide leadership with clear, product-level margin visibility across customers and programs
  • Support the sales team with pricing guidance and deal-level economics
  • Continuously rebuild and stress-test the margin model as the business scales and evolves
  • Generate ideas and test new approaches to pricing — this is nuanced work that rewards creative thinking

  1. Strategic Program Evaluation

Ability to evaluate new supplier programs and retail partnerships regularly. This leader will drive the financial and commercial diligence behind those decisions.

  • Analyze program-level economics and return potential for new opportunities
  • Evaluate working capital implications of new programs
  • Assess supplier commitments, deposit requirements, and margin potential
  • Build business cases and investment recommendations for leadership review
  • Identify new opportunities — where should the business grow, and how?

  1. Supplier Contracts & Commercial Terms

Management of supplier agreements and retail customer contracts are core commercial assets. This role ensures their structure protects their financial position and supports scalable growth.

  • Oversee pricing adjustment mechanisms, payment terms, and deposit structures
  • Manage minimum order quantities, inventory ownership, liability terms, and minimum commitment structures
  • Coordinate with external legal counsel on contract review and drafting
  • Ensure contract structures align with program economics and working capital strategy

  1. Financial Oversight & Reporting

Working closely with the controller and CFO this role will take some ownership of financial reporting and ensure leadership has a precise view of the business at all times.

  • Partner with the controller to review the books and produce accurate monthly financial reporting
  • Oversee the annual budgeting and forecasting process across both business units
  • Build KPI dashboards that provide granular visibility into product-level performance by customer and region
  • Identify opportunities to improve margin and operating efficiency on an ongoing basis

  1. Technology, AI & Operational Leverage

They are committed to doing more with less — and believes technology is a key lever. This leader will help identify and implement AI and modern tools across finance and operations, including partnering with suppliers and retail customers to get them on board.

  • Identify and lead adoption of AI tools and technology that improve financial modeling, reporting, and operations
  • Partner with suppliers and retail partners to implement shared technology solutions where appropriate
  • Build scalable systems and processes that allow the business to grow without adding headcount proportionally

Ideal Candidate Profile

We are looking for someone with exceptional horsepower, a hunger to build something, and the commercial instincts to help a great business get even better.

Background

  • 7–15+ years of progressive experience in strategic finance, corporate/business strategy and analysis, FP&A, or commercial finance
  • Background in private equity portfolio companies, consumer packaged goods, global sourcing, trading, or supply chain-driven businesses strongly preferred
  • Prior experience in management consulting and/or banking preferred
  • Experience with pricing models, program economics, or commodity businesses is a significant plus
  • Prior exposure to supplier or customer contract structuring is highly valued

Who You Are

  • A genuine owner — you take responsibility and make decisions quickly
  • Excited by the intersection of finance and strategy — you want to understand the business deeply, not just report on it
  • Strong management instincts — you can lead, inspire, and hold people accountable
  • Visionary and idea-driven — you bring new thinking and are always asking "where is the opportunity?"
  • A relationship builder — you understand that this is a relationship-driven business and can work effectively with suppliers, retail partners, and internal teams
  • Energized by technology — you follow AI developments closely and think about how to apply them practically
  • A culture fit: collaborative, low-ego, direct, and genuinely excited to be part of something special

Compensation & Benefits

They offer a competitive, performance-driven package designed to give this leader real upside as the business grows — and a clear path toward a partnership-level relationship over time.

  • Base salary: Competitive, commensurate with experience (~$150–200K)
  • Performance Bonus: tied directly to company revenue and profitability — intentionally weighted toward variable upside
  • Annual profit sharing: a meaningful portion of company profits allocated to the executive team each year
  • 100% employer match on 401(k)
  • Executive-level perks and benefits
  • A real seat at the table — and a path to helping lead and eventually run this business
