Purpose of Job

This role is ideal for a detail‑oriented professional with experience in healthcare, medical devices, biotech, or health insurance contract administration. The Patent Agent will work closely with internal teams to ensure agreements align with regulatory and business requirements. This role is hybrid onsite in our San Mateo office 2–3 days a week.

Responsibilities
  • Draft and prosecute U.S. and international patent applications in coordination with internal and outside counsel.
  • Conduct patentability, freedom‑to‑operate, and validity analyses.
  • Collaborate with inventors, engineers, consulting engineering firms, and R&D to identify and evaluate new inventions.
  • Oversee development and execution of the company's intellectual property strategy.
  • Collaborate with internal and external legal teams to support patent litigation including discovery, depositions, and trial preparation.
  • Provide assistance for special projects and additional tasks as needed.
Skills for Success
  • Strong understanding of U.S. and international patent law and patent systems.
  • Excellent technical and legal writing skills.
  • Experience in medical devices; catheter experience preferred.
  • Proficiency with databases for performing prior art searches.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to coordinate with cross‑functional teams.
Education
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, biology, or a related field.
  • Registered to practice before the USPTO.
Required Experience
  • 5+ years of experience as a patent agent including experience with medical device patents.
  • Experience with in‑house patent portfolio management.
