Salary: PSYCHIATRIC TECHNICIAN (SAFETY) $5,673.00 - $6,599.00 S $5,864.00 - $6,993.00 T $6,079.00 - $7,249.00 U. New candidates will start at the minimum salary of the classification or the alternative range when applicable.

The Safety Psychiatric Technician plays a vital role in ensuring the mental health and safety of individuals within a secure environment, such as hospitals or treatment facilities. This position, under the supervision of unit leaders, involves a range of responsibilities designed to create a healthy and secure atmosphere for patients and inmates.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Establishing and maintaining a clean, safe, and therapeutic environment for individuals undergoing treatment.
  • Applying mental health principles to build and maintain strong, secure relationships with patients or inmates.
  • Overseeing and facilitating a variety of patient activities to promote engagement and well-being.
  • Conducting custody-related tasks, including searching for contraband and inspecting facilities for security vulnerabilities.
  • Watching and intervening in patient behavior to avert potential harm or escape attempts effectively.
  • Utilizing Therapeutic Strategies and Interventions (TSI) to ensure safety and manage crises, which may include patient containment, heavy lifting, applying restraints, and responding to emergencies.
  • Administering medications and closely monitoring patients' physical conditions, reporting any significant changes to supervisors or physicians.
  • Keeping precise nursing notes in patient records and following infection control procedures diligently.
  • Achieving certification in CPR and other necessary skills as required.

Requirements for Consideration:

  1. BE LIST ELIGIBLE: Successfully complete the competitive State civil service exam for this classification.
  2. BE TRANSFER ELIGIBLE: Currently employed with the State of California in the same classification or a comparable role.
  3. BE REINSTATEMENT ELIGIBLE: Having previous permanent employment with the State of California in the same or a similar classification.

This position involves working within a Secured Treatment Area (STA) and may include 12-hour shifts or alternative schedules depending on staffing needs. There are multiple vacancies available, and candidates might be assigned to any shift or unit based on the hospital's requirements.
