Position Summary

The Community Mental Health Therapist provides culturally responsive mental health and support services to children, youth, and families in community‑based settings throughout San Francisco. Clients and their families are referred to us by Family Resource Centers (FRCs), SFUSD, the SF Department of Public Health, and internally from other YMCA programs. The role combines mental health consultation, direct therapeutic services, and referral linkage to local resources. Service intensity ranges from outpatient counseling to intensive interventions that may include case management, service coordination, court advocacy, and family support.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Service Delivery

  • Provide individual, family, and group therapy in community‑based settings (schools, homes, and FRCs).
  • Deliver both outpatient and intensive services (including ISCS programs for youth on probation).
  • Maintain a minimum average of 10.5 billable therapeutic hours per week on community mental health days.
  • On Family Resource Center days, provide 5 direct service hours per day, with the remaining time dedicated to documentation, supervision, or administrative tasks.
  • Manage a balanced caseload to meet productivity expectations while accounting for no‑shows or cancellations.

Case Management and Client Support

  • Conduct comprehensive clinical assessments and develop treatment plans.
  • Coordinate referrals and linkages to community resources and support programs.
  • Collaborate with schools, probation officers, and other service providers to ensure integrated client care.
  • Communicate clearly with clients and families about participation and attendance expectations.

Documentation and Reporting

  • Complete accurate and timely clinical documentation in the ECM database.
  • Track weekly service units and maintain productivity records as required.
  • Meet all clinical documentation and reporting deadlines as determined by the clinical supervisor and contract requirements.

Professional Collaboration and Development

  • Participate in regular clinical supervision and case consultation.
  • Attend mandatory staff meetings, professional development trainings, and agency events.
  • Maintain adherence to ethical and legal standards for mental health practice, confidentiality, and client care.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Monitor and submit Medi‑Cal and other grant‑related billing documentation.
  • Support data collection, evaluation, and reporting requirements for grant‑ and contract‑funded programs.
  • Contribute to a positive and collaborative team culture that centers client well‑being and equity.

Qualifications

  • MA or MS in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, or Social Work, or be within one academic year of completion.
  • California Board of Behavioral Science registration mandatory, or in the last year of graduate school and must be registration eligible.
  • 2+ years of work or volunteer experience in social services.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver relevant and nuanced clinical care.
  • Proficiency with MS Windows and Office Suite.
  • YMCA approved CPR/First Aid Certification.
  • Clear TB test required.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

Work Locations

Community‑based across San Francisco, including schools, homes, and Family Resource Centers. This position is full‑time with one day at a Family Resource Center and four days in community‑based settings. Frequent local travel is required; must have access to reliable transportation (personal vehicle or public transit). Mileage reimbursement applies for multiple work sites per day. Flexibility is required to meet client and program needs, including possible evening or weekend hours.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods.
  • Carry and transport light materials such as a laptop or case files.
  • Engage with clients and families in a variety of settings, including home visits.

Salary Description

The Bilingual Community Mental Health Therapist offers a salary rate of $35.50 per hour. This rate is based on salary benchmarking for similar roles and is aligned with grant fund approvals and requirements for the position.
