Position Summary

PIRE is looking for a Tribal Data Epidemiologist-Associate Research Scientist to add to our Prevention Research Center team located in Berkeley, California. Initial work assignments will range across tobacco and other substance use areas, including evaluating local programs focusing on tobacco and other substance use prevention; co-writing supporting a variety of evaluation and economic analysis efforts in injury and substance use; and grant-writing. The salary for this full-time position (100% FTE) ranges between $49 and $52 per hour. Note that full-time funding is assured through June 30, 2026; after that time, we shall seek funding, but it is not guaranteed.

Job Requirements

  • Training or experience in substance use and injury prevention required
  • A master's degree is required but a Ph.D. in Public Health, Preventive Medicine or related health behavior research is preferred
  • A track record of at least 10 relevant publications in Tribal public health
  • Good written and oral communication skills in English
  • Excellent management and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently and coordinate several simultaneous project activities
  • Experience using R, SAS, SPSS, or STATA and preferably more than one
  • Two professional references
  • One writing sample required (preferably a first-authored peer-reviewed publication)
  • Able to work in the United States for any employer
Some Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Conducting evaluations of substance use and injury prevention programs, including literature review, logic model, evaluation plan, analysis, and reports
  • Cleaning, linkage, and analysis of large administrative and health care claims data sets
  • Planning, performing, and interpreting statistical analyses
  • Contributing to development, maintenance, and application of injury and substance use incidence/cost/return-on-investment models
  • Developing and overseeing execution of research protocols
  • Developing and contributing to applications for funding
  • Developing and contributing to research articles for publication in peer-reviewed journals, as well as reports, presentations, and other contract documents and deliverables
  • Presenting research findings at professional/scientific meetings and conferences is optional but preferred.
