Founded in 1974, Swords to Plowshares is a community-based not-for-profit organization that provides counseling and case management, employment and training, housing, and legal assistance to veterans in the San Francisco Bay Area. We promote and protect the rights of veterans through advocacy, public education, and partnerships with local, state, and national entities. Summary:
The Community Case Specialist (CCS) plays a key role in the day-to-day operations of our high-traffic Drop-In Center, creating a welcoming and supportive space for all veterans. This frontline position involves preparing the lobby, assisting clients with navigating internal and external resources, and engaging with individuals who may be experiencing intoxication or active mental health symptoms. The ideal candidate is compassionate, adaptable, and committed to providing respectful, client-centered support in a dynamic environment
Responsibilities:
• Prepare the Drop-In lobby before opening (e.g., make coffee, set out snacks, organize sign-in sheets) and maintain a clean, organized, and sanitized environment throughout the day.
• Greet all entrants, verify veteran and enrollment status, and provide general information about agency services.
• Engage clients to screen and triage access to services, connecting them to appropriate internal staff or external resources.
• Manage difficult interactions at the front desk, deter unauthorized access, respond to escalating situations, and ensure timely communication to the team when immediate intervention is required
• Document incident reports clearly and accurately.
• Assist clients with questions about available internal and external resources.
• Distribute and collect enrollment packets; ensure completion and coordinate follow-up with Community Case Managers.
• Respond to drop-in inquiries from the public and clients regarding available services and support.
• Maintain and update lobby materials, such as resource guides and event flyers.
• Receive, sort, and distribute incoming mail.
• Perform administrative tasks, including data entry (e.g., ECM, progress notes), veteran status verification, filing, scanning, copying, faxing, and answering phones.
• Support billing and other client-related data entry tasks.
• Perform additional duties as assigned
Desired Qualifications:
- Knowledge of crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques with a proven ability to effectively implement
- Familiarity with the Harm Reduction Philosophy
- Strong written, verbal, and listening skills
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and general computer use
- Valid California driver's license and clean driving record
- Reliable attendance and punctuality
- Highly organized with strong attention to detail
- Effective time management and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively
- Physically able to lift 50 lbs. and push a large dumpster
- Comfortable working with diverse and at-risk populations, including individuals experiencing intoxication or acute mental health symptoms
- Must be able to perform essential job functions with reasonable accommodations
- Ability to effectively communicate in English with staff, clients, and external partners and stakeholders.
Experience: - Minimum one (1) year of experience in a fast-paced social services setting, working with individuals facing behavioral health and substance use challenges
- Military experience (preferred) and skills will be considered in lieu of direct experience
