Manufacturing Mechanical Design Engineer

  2026-02-23     Atomic Machines     Emeryville,CA
Description:

About Atomic Machines

Atomic Machines is ushering in a new era of micromanufacturing with its Matter Compilerâ„¢ technology. This full-stack technology enables new classes of micromachines to be designed and built by offering manufacturing processes and a materials library that is inaccessible to semiconductor manufacturing methods. It promises to unlock MEMS manufacturing for the many device classes frustrated by semiconductor methods and to open up entirely new product classes. The Matter Compilerâ„¢ technology fully realizes the digital manufacturing dream: bits and raw materials go in, and complete, functional micromachines come out. The Atomic Machines team has also created an exciting first device-one that was only made possible by the existence of the Matter Compilerâ„¢ technology-that we will be unveiling to the world soon.

Our offices are in Emeryville and Santa Clara, California.

About the Role:

The Manufacturing Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for transforming engineering concepts, part designs, and assembly drawings provided by Mechanical Design Engineers into complete, manufacturable CAD, documentation, and electrical interface packages suitable for contract manufacturers. This role applies strong experience in DFA (Design for Assembly), DFS (Design for Service), and DFM (Design for Manufacturability) to simplify designs, reduce cost, and improve assembly efficiency while maintaining performance, safety, quality, and compliance.

This position is based in Emeryville, CA.

What You'll Do:

  • Develop detailed 3D CAD models, manufacturing and assembly drawings, and BOMs from engineering concepts and preliminary designs.
  • Perform engineering calculations for machine and tooling designs, including strength, speed, force, temperature, pressure, and power requirements.
  • Analyze and review drawings and specifications to define dimensions, materials, tolerances, finishes, safety, and mechanical properties prior to release.
  • Apply DFA, DFS, and DFM principles to create cost-effective, robust, and manufacturable designs for contract manufacturers.
  • Design mechanical systems with a strong focus on inherent safety, incorporating Atomic Machines design standards, applicable industry standards, and ISO requirements.
  • Use risk-aware design practices to mitigate hazards through mechanical design, guarding, material selection, and system layout.
  • Evaluate the feasibility of multi-machine and sequential operations in automated and semi-automated systems.
  • Apply best practices in tolerancing, fastener selection, finishes, and assembly methods to ensure repeatable, high-quality manufacturing.
  • Ensure designs support reliable assembly, durability, and long-term performance by contract manufacturers.
  • Coordinate and maintain project documentation, including quotes, drawing registers, requisitions, schedules, and revision histories.
  • Collaborate with customers, internal engineering teams, and vendors to gather requirements, clarify specifications, and align on technical details.
  • Work closely with electrical designers and programmers to ensure mechanical designs integrate with electrical, controls, and operational requirements.
  • Communicate design updates, technical risks, and progress to the Manager of Mechanical Engineering and project stakeholders.
  • Support build, assembly, and integration phases by assisting fabricators, machinists, toolmakers, electricians, and other production partners.
  • Specify, select, and requisition tools, fixtures, equipment, and purchased mechanical components based on performance, quality, cost, and availability.
  • Interpret project documentation to define testing objectives, procedures, and required equipment.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of internal design standards through feedback from manufacturing, build, and field experience.
What You'll Need:
  • 5+ years of mechanical design experience, preferably in automated equipment, machinery, or industrial systems.
  • Strong proficiency in CAD.
  • Demonstrated experience applying DFA, DFS, and DFM principles in production environments.
  • Solid understanding of machining, fabrication, assembly methods, and GD&T.
  • Experience working with contract manufacturers and external fabrication partners.
  • Ability to perform engineering calculations and validate mechanical designs.
  • Experience with automated systems, robotics, or complex industrial machinery.
  • Background in electrical-mechanical integration and control system interfaces.
  • Exposure to machine safety standards and global compliance requirements.
  • First-principles thinking with sound instincts for strategic tradeoffs.
  • Diploma or degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Design, or a related field.

The compensation for this position also includes equity and benefits.
