Job Description

The Animal Technician will be responsible for providing care and support to laboratory animals. This role is crucial to maintaining the health and well-being of research animals, ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations and guidelines.

Responsibilities

  • Provide daily care for laboratory animals, ensuring their health and well-being.

  • Perform tasks such as changing cages and racks, and delivering food and water according to established procedures.

  • Maintain equipment and animal housing areas in accordance with standard operating procedures and regulations.

  • Keep accurate records including per-diem records, animal health surveillance, feed logs, temperature/humidity charts, and animal receipt and disposition logs.

  • Identify and remedy any issues related to animal care, reporting them immediately to the appropriate personnel.

  • Assist with technical procedures as required to support research efforts.

  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and institutional regulations.

Essential Skills

  • 1 year of experience in animal handling or lab animal sanitation equipment operations.

  • Ability to communicate animal health information effectively and maintain legible records.

  • General knowledge of feeding, caging, and space requirements for laboratory animals.

  • Skills in identifying animal health concerns and ensuring regulatory compliance.

  • Full knowledge of disinfection, sanitation, and cleaning agents.

  • Ability to use cage washers and autoclaves for cleaning and sterilization.

  • Basic computer skills including email communication, scanning barcodes, and submitting reports electronically.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Graduation from high school or GED.

  • Completion of training equivalent to the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician certification of the AALAS.

  • Ability to follow work rules and instructions, work independently or collaboratively.

  • Physical ability to bend, squat, kneel, stand, reach above shoulder level, and move on hard surfaces for extended periods.

  • Capability to push and pull heavy objects and safely lift loads up to 50 pounds.

Work Environment

The Animal Technician will work within a laboratory environment in a Vivarium setting. The role requires wearing personal protective equipment such as protective clothing, glasses, safety shoes, gloves, face masks, and respirators when necessary. The work schedule is Monday to Friday, with shifts from either 0600-1500 or 0700-1600, as determined. Strict adherence to campus rules, including no eating, drinking, or smoking in animal areas, is mandatory.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract position based out of San Francisco, CA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $24.00 - $24.00/hr.
