Labor and Employee Relations Consultant

Job Summary

The Labor and Employee Relations Consultant provides labor and employee relations guidance to all levels within the organization, utilizing specialized labor and employee relations expertise within area of responsibility to resolve highly complex issues in creative and effective ways. Internal and external contacts often pertain to significant labor and employee relations programs and objectives. Normally receives little direction on assignments. Serves in a lead capacity, providing guidance to other professionals throughout the organization. The individual has independent responsibility for providing advice and consultation to managers on labor and employee relations matters and assessing risk related to those issues.

Responsibilities

• Lead local negotiations and represent UCSF's interests at system-wide level negotiations; conduct training; investigate and respond to grievances; promote proactive management practices; and administer and interpret collective bargaining agreements and University policies.
• Provide labor and employee relations guidance to all levels within the organization.
• Work independently on highly complex issues with little direction.
• Develop and establish rapport with varied stakeholders.
• Make decisions and adjust effectively in changing priorities and environments.
• Thrive in a fast‑paced environment with competing requirements and deadlines.
• Handle extremely difficult or volatile situations effectively.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in a related area and six years of experience in labor and employee relations or related field and/or equivalent experience/training.
• Advanced knowledge of labor/employment law and the principles and techniques of labor negotiations.
• Advanced knowledge of the principles of advocacy to represent the organization in complex and sensitive dispute forums.
• Advanced knowledge of applicable state and federal laws and court decisions regarding employment‑related matters.
• Specialized knowledge within the labor relations field.
• Ability to bargain and represent the organization's interests effectively.
• Experience leading and mentoring other labor relations professionals.
• Advanced analytical skills to conduct analysis and develop recommendations.
• Experience handling extremely difficult or volatile situations/individuals effectively.

Preferred Qualifications

• Advanced knowledge of organizational policies and procedures; advanced knowledge of functional area and understanding how work impacts other areas in Human Resources and the organization.
• Experience in the public sector, higher education.

Benefits
