Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Camp Director, the Camp Coordinator is responsible for creating a positive and nurturing summer camp environment for youth campers and counselors by focusing on youth development, camp safety, parent communication, and staff support. The Camp Coordinator will work closely with the Camp Director to plan and implement a robust summer program using the YMCA's youth development model. The Camp Coordinator is expected to be a positive role model for youth and staff, build healthy relationships, and align the program with the YMCA's three areas of focus: youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.

Job Responsibilities

  • Program Planning & Implementation
  • Assist with planning and implementing 12 weeks of summer camp programming, including opening/closing circles, snack/lunch times, and enrichment/recreational activities.
  • Adhere to the summer camp calendar and implement weekly themed camps.
  • Manage day-to-day operations of camp.
  • Help coordinate camper survey process.
  • Assist with Summer Camp Campaign.
  • Staff Supervision & Leadership
  • Supervise and support staff.
  • Maintain a high standard of leadership and facilitation skills with enthusiasm, creativity, and respect.
  • Facilitate staff meetings and trainings as necessary.
  • Coach and provide immediate feedback to staff.
  • Camper Behavior & Safety
  • Monitor behavior and provide conflict mediation as needed.
  • Appropriately handle youth behavior issues and follow up with families when necessary.
  • Uphold YMCA policies for safety, supervision, mandated reporting, and risk management.
  • Frequently wash hands for a minimum of 20 seconds with soap and water.
  • Facility & Operations Management
  • Assist in facility management, including bathroom supervision, transportation, and overall safety/security.
  • Ensure camp rooms, gyms, and closets are maintained, clean, and organized.
  • Communication & Relationship Management
  • Develop and maintain high levels of communication with staff, campers, and parents.
  • Ensure accuracy of information shared with camp counselors and families.
  • Develop and maintain positive parent relations; respond courteously to concerns.
  • Compliance & Professional Development
  • Comply with all YMCA of San Francisco policies and procedures.
  • Complete all the required Talent LMS safety training and Y-USA e-Learning prior to the first shift.
  • Attend all required staff meetings and trainings.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, or Russian language skills

  • You must have physical, visual, and auditory ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.

Salary Description

The Camp Coordinator position offers an hourly rate of $27.00 - $32.00 Per Hour, based on experience, qualifications, and alignment with salary benchmarks for similar roles. Compensation is in accordance with grant funding approval and program budget requirements.
  • Minimum 21 years old
  • Two years of experience leading enrichment or recreational activities with groups of youth (any grades K-8th)
  • One year of experience supervising staff
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Demonstrated experience collaborating and building relationships with others
  • Experience with diverse populations
  • Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds
  • CPR & First Aid certified (may be completed upon hire)
  • Fingerprint background check clearance
  • TB test clearance (for camp programs on school sites)
  • Must be able to attend all required Day Camp Trainings and meetings - Dates TBD
