Under general direction, the Institutional Police Lieutenant manages the total operation of the Community College District law enforcement program. As a sworn Peace Officer under the direction of the Chief of Police, performs supervisory duties, general law enforcement and patrol duties in uniform, without limitations, to meet Department staffing needs.
Incumbents in this classification supervise subordinate sworn and non-sworn staff. This position is designated supervisory and is not represented by a bargaining unit.
Job duties include: supervision of all assigned personnel, protection of life and property, enforcement of all pertinent laws, coordination of activities and schedules of personnel, directing enforcement of city, county, and state laws, selecting, supervising, and evaluating security personnel, preparing the annual departmental budget, managing the parking enforcement program, coordinating training programs, assuming administrative investigations, coordinating information systems, managing the departments vehicle fleet, providing leadership to the Dispatch Center, leading the hiring process for public safety positions, attending Participatory Governance Committee meetings, reviewing special events requests, acting as Incident Commander during critical emergency situations, managing the Sonitrol alarm system, and performing related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum qualifications include a Bachelors degree from an accredited college in police science, criminology, public administration, or related field; two (2) years of experience of progressive law enforcement leadership management experience, as a Lead in a Public Safety position; and four (4) years of experience as a police officer, member of a military police unit or other work involving the safeguarding of life and property. Possession of a valid California driver License and a P.O.S.T. Supervisory Certificate is also required. Substitutions and desirable qualifications are available.
