Founded in 1975, it provides culturally competent and linguistically appropriate services to low?income women, seniors, immigrants, and youth.

Position Overview

Reporting to the Managing Attorney for the Violence Against Women Project, the Staff Attorney will offer legal representation to low?income clients across various gender?based violence issues. The role includes community outreach, representation at forums, and administrative support, and is based in our San Francisco or East Bay office depending on program needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive full?scope legal representation and consultation to survivors of gender?based violence, including restraining order hearings, child custody and support matters, contested dissolutions, immigration petitions, public benefits matters, and other practice areas as needed.
  • Conduct thorough legal assessments with clients to screen for potential remedies and other legal needs.
  • Support reporting to funders regarding the organizations work.
  • Coordinate community education and outreach activities and staff clinics accessible to the community.
  • Represent the organization at community, legal, and other meetings, including funders and donors.
  • Offer technical assistance and training to community and public agencies.
  • Guide volunteers, interns, and pro bono attorneys when required.
  • Assist with administrative and fundraising work as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications
  • A member in good standing of the California Bar; provisional bar candidates considered.
  • Minimum two years of litigation and/or work experience in low?income communities, particularly serving survivors of gender?based violence.
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice, the organizations mission, and underserved API and other communities of color.
  • Strong advocacy and courtroom skills representing limited English proficiency (LEP) clients.
  • Bilingual and bicultural skills relevant to low?income communities.
  • Ability to work well in a team?oriented, multi?cultural environment.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with Legal Server, Google Workspace, and other applicable software.
  • Possession of a California drivers license and personal vehicle.
  • Proficiency in a second language, preferably Spanish, Cantonese, or another API language.
