Senior - Staff Growth Product Designer

  2026-01-10     Creative People     San Francisco,CA
Description:

Senior to Staff Level: Growth Product Designer

About the Company:

We're a research-driven platform on a mission to democratize access to knowledge. Trusted by a global academic community, we design tools that support collaboration, discovery, and meaningful impact across science, education, and research.

About the role:

We are seeking a highly motivated and data-informed Growth Product Designer to join the Growth team. You will be responsible for identifying, designing, and launching high-leverage experiments that drive key growth metrics, such as acquisition, activation, and retention. This role is ideal for a designer who thrives in ambiguity, embraces a startup mindset, and uses rapid iteration and data analysis to achieve business outcomes.

What You'll Do:

  • Own the User Journey: Focus on building the 'on-ramps' to our core product 'highway,' designing seamless experiences that connect new and existing users to the product's core value.
  • Rapid Design & Experimentation: Apply an Urgency mindset to your work, quickly moving from hypothesis to prototype to live A/B test. Design variants that cleanly isolate a hypothesis to maximize learning speed.
  • Data-Driven Strategy: Leverage your Metric literacy & interpretation to navigate dashboards, analyze experiment readouts, and independently diagnose where and why users drop, stall, or fail to realize value. Use these insights to refine hypotheses and propose follow-up tests.
  • Opportunity Identification: Within a defined strategy, actively identify short-term Opportunity identification for growth. You'll frame clear hypotheses about how proposed solutions will drive impact, evaluating trade-offs between business value, user needs, and technical constraints.
  • Independent Problem-Solving: Act as an Independent problem-solver, converting vague product requirements into clear next steps. Proactively seek out necessary context from GMs, engineers, analysts, or other SMEs to unblock yourself and move forward without hand-holding.
  • Clear Communication & Alignment: Be a Clear communicator in writing and in person. Confidently manage stakeholder conversations, clearly articulating and defending design decisions with strong rationale to build alignment and confidence across cross-functional partners.
  • Quality Execution: Balance execution speed and design quality, applying standard UX and growth techniques to reduce friction and structure flows for clarity, momentum, and persuasion.
We're Looking For:
  • Proven experience in a Product Design or Growth Design role, with a strong portfolio showcasing successful A/B testing and growth-focused projects.
  • Deep understanding of product metrics, growth funnels (AARRR), and how design choices directly impact business outcomes.
  • Strong visual design and marketing design skills, with the ability to write clear, persuasive copy that resonates with users.
  • A pragmatic approach to design, with sharp 80/20 judgment to know what needs to be perfect for conversion and what can be 'good enough' for an experiment.
  • An Optimistic attitude and belief in doing whatever it takes to succeed, while maintaining Curiosity for new technologies and frameworks.

A Note on Our Application Process

We know job searching isn't easy - especially in a market shaped by AI tools, bots, and extremely high application volume. Many candidates receive automated responses or rejections, and great people can unintentionally get missed in the mix. That's frustrating, and we want to be transparent about how we approach this.

Our intention is to run a thoughtful, human hiring process and to give strong candidates a clear way to stand out if this role is genuinely a great fit for them.

To support this, we've included a few optional questions below. These serve two purposes:
They help signal intent and fit.

Taking the time to respond tells us you've read the role carefully and see a meaningful alignment - which matters more than ever when roles receive hundreds (or thousands) of applications.
They help us understand your experience faster.

Some excellent candidates may not match every requirement perfectly on paper. Your responses give us context that a résumé alone can't, helping us prioritize applications where there's strong potential alignment.

We can't promise individual responses to every applicant, but we can promise that thoughtful, relevant applications are more likely to be reviewed closely and receive a response.

At the end of the day, our goal is simple: to connect great people with the right opportunities - and to do so with clarity, fairness, and respect for your time.

Help us help you.

Job-Specific Application Questions
  1. Startup Mindset: Describe the very first step you take when given a project brief that is incomplete or vague.
  2. Growth Strategy: Share an example of a design or project where your initial approach failed to meet the goal (e.g., resulted in a null test). What was the single biggest lesson you learned from that failure?
  3. Collaboration Skills: In one sentence, what is your primary goal when presenting a controversial design decision to a high-level executive?
  4. Data Analysis: Tell us about a time you used data to diagnose why users were dropping off in a workflow. What behavioral assumption was confirmed (or debunked) by the data?
  5. A/B Testing & Portfolio: Describe a statistically significant A/B test 'win' from your portfolio that also revealed an unexpected side-effect or secondary data pattern. Briefly state the side-effect and the specific follow-up action you recommended.
Optional Application Questions (Please note: These questions are optional but strongly encouraged if this role feels like a great fit.)
  1. In 3-5 sentences, what specifically interested you about this role and company?
  2. Which part of your experience best aligns with the core requirements of this role?
  3. Is there anything in your background that may not be obvious from your résumé but is particularly relevant to this position?
