Job Summary
The Certified Athletic Trainer (AT) will work primary out of the Orthopaedic Institute on the Mission Bay Campus of UCSF. The position entails a clinical component of physician support, an outreach component of on-site athletic training services, and an administrative component of assisting with projects and events.
Clinically, the employee will spend time in a specialty clinic assisting with the day-to-day operations. The AT will be asked to room patients, assist in the patient intake process, and pull up any necessary records relevant to the patient visit. The AT will also provide physician support by assisting with patient education and post-operative procedures as requested. Other responsibilities include assisting with the daily administration of clinic duties, and other tasks as assigned.
Outreach for the AT consists of providing on-site care for high school athletes. They will work independently as assigned, or in collaboration with Staff Athletic Trainers, attending physicians, and other staff in delivering sports medicine services for patients and athletes. They will be expected to establish or continue to facilitate a working relationship with the assigned school in delivering athletic training services to the athletes. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to providing on-site sports medicine care, sport event coverage, athlete health and safety education, and additional administrative duties.
Administratively, the AT will be asked to assist with program and department projects and events. Our ATs provide administrative and planning support for various high schools screening exams as well as support for educational conferences and community event coverage.
Clinic Responsibilities
* Assists with patient intake and assessment. Assists Physician with clinical procedures and transports patients.
* Provides therapeutic exercise programs and ambulation training for patients with athletic injuries.
* Provides exercise protocol and instruction to patients under the supervision of a sports medicine physician.
* Applies protective and therapeutic wrapping. Under supervision, applies and instructs on the use and care of orthopedic appliances. Evaluates cast problems and adjusts accordingly.
* Documents patient condition in electronic medical record. Reports symptoms of illness to Physician.
* Contributes to patient education sessions and assists with development of education materials. May instruct medical students and residents in casting and bracing techniques.
* Verifies presence of medical records and x-rays prior to scheduled appointments; requests existing records and x-rays as necessary; documents information to complete patient's record.
* Transports patients and lab specimens when necessary.
* Assists with platelet rich plasma procedures (PRP) and ultrasound-guided injection procedures.
* Stocks and clean examination/cast rooms as assigned.
* Evaluation to include ligament and joint arthrometry.
* Other duties as specified by clinical assignment.
Outreach Responsibilities
* Works independently to provide athletes with injury prevention training and evaluation, management, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries under the direction of a physician and within an athletic trainer's scope of practice.
* Screens and refers injured athletes to athletic team physician or other medical services as appropriate.
* Administers first-aid and basic therapeutic modalities and manual therapies applicable to orthopedics and sports medicine.
* Coordinates and conducts sports education programs. Provides injury and health education to students, athletes, and coaches.
* Maintain athletic training facilities and equipment, ensuring all equipment is operational and athletic training facilities are maintained according to standards.
* Responsible for inventory maintenance, including supplies and medical equipment
* Reports injuries, completing appropriate documentation, and maintenance of medical charts.
* Administers baseline concussion testing
* Assists with community events and competitions, professional, and/or intercollegiate events and competitions as part of the medical team
* Maintains discretion and confidentiality in all matters involving patient injury and treatment.
* Assists with data collection and analysis related to sports programs and / or research initiatives.
* Participates in the Annual PlaySafe Cardiac Pre-Participation Physical Event.
* Perform other duties as assigned by the PlaySafe Program Director and/or the Manager of Athletic Training Services or sports attending staff.
The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.
Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.
The salary range for this position is $69,700 - $149,900 (Annual Rate).

Required Qualifications
* Current and in good standing Athletic Trainer Certification (ATC) with the Board of Certification, Inc.
* AHA BLS / CPR Certification
* Demonstration of recent experience with sports medicine/event coverage/first responder care of the high school athlete or beyond.
* Two (2) years' education and/or experience in the athletic training field
* Bachelor's degree in related field
* Thorough knowledge of athletic injury prevention and the administration of therapeutic modalities, devices, and rehabilitation techniques.
* Ability to work in a collaborative manner as a member of multidisciplinary team.
* Strong written and oral communication.
* Excellent time management and organizational skills.
* Thorough knowledge of medical terminology appropriate to job responsibilities.
* Excellent interpersonal / communication skills to interact with a diverse patient population.
* Strong familiarity of all Microsoft Office programs.
* Project management experience.
* Ability to provide first responder care at athletic events.
* Ability to maintain discretion and confidentiality in handling sensitive matters involving athletic injures and treatments
Preferred Qualifications
* Strong manual therapy skills applicable to orthopedics and sports medicine.
* For positions associated with Sports Medicine, must maintain current knowledge of applicable rules and standards of the affiliated athletic conference, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) or National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), California Interscholastic Federation (CIF), as well as other associations and agencies to which the campus adheres, and, at all times, avoid any and all violations of these rules and standards.
* Previous experience working in a clinical setting with physicians and office assistants.
* Advanced degree in related field
