Overview

The City of Berkeley is now accepting applications for Assistant Inspector in the Rental Housing Safety Program within the Building & Safety Division of the Planning Department. The Assistant Inspector will gain expertise in housing inspection, code enforcement, administrative functions, building permit review, and customer service skills while studying and enforcing the Berkeley Municipal Code and California Building Standards Codes.

Responsibilities

Upon approval from the Building Official, the Assistant Inspector will perform housing inspections in the field throughout the City of Berkeley under the guidance of a Housing Inspector. Inspections will gradually increase in scope and difficulty as new skills and knowledge are acquired and confidence grows.

Qualifications

  1. Equivalent to high school graduation and:
    1. Two years of full-time paid experience in one of the following:
      • Building, civil, or architectural design drafting
      • Building, housing, or home inspection
      • Code enforcement
      • Permit processing
      • Performing carpentry, electrical, heating and refrigeration, plumbing, or similar work
    2. Three years of full-time experience in support of building inspections, housing inspections, or code enforcement; or
    3. Completion of two years of education in a recognized college or university with 12 semester or 16 quarter units in civil or structural engineering, construction technology, design, inspection technology, architectural drafting, mechanical or electrical engineering.

Other requirements: Must be able to travel to various locations within and outside the City of Berkeley to meet program needs and fulfill job responsibilities. A valid California driver's license and satisfactory driving record are required for city business travel.

Examination Process

  • Training & experience review.

Tests may include written, oral, or other exercises assessing typing, math, reading, writing, analytical skills, problem solving, computer and software proficiency, or other job-related knowledge, skill, ability or qualification. Examination dates and components are subject to change. Successful candidates will be placed on an employment eligible list for final selection interviews.
