Legal Assistant – Health & Human Services Team – City Attorney's Office (8173)
The San Francisco City Attorney's Office is seeking a qualified, motivated legal assistant to join its Health & Human Services Team. The Office provides exceptional legal services to the City's Mayor, Board of Supervisors, officials, and departments.
Job Description
Responsibilities
- Review and proofread contracts, legislation, responsive pleadings, discovery documents, subpoenas, legal memoranda, and correspondence for accuracy.
- Assist with review and disclosure of documents for public records requests and third‑party subpoenas.
- Implement document litigation holds across City departments.
- Draft and issue subpoenas.
- Assist with discovery, especially electronic discovery, including review and production of documents from IPRO Eclipse; prepare privilege logs.
- Conduct searches and manage documents in IPRO Eclipse, Concordance, CaseMap, and Text Map, reviewing for relevance, responsiveness, and privilege.
- Assist in preparing motions and ensure filings are accurate, properly formatted, and filed on time, including electronic filing.
- Organize and prepare documents, exhibits, and materials for discovery, hearings, and trials; maintain team files and an electronic database of key written advice.
- Manage multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize work from multiple attorneys.
- Maintain calendars for multiple attorneys.
- Assist with other projects and duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Compliance with California Business & Professions Code Section 6450 by possessing at least one of the following:
- Certificate of completion of a paralegal program approved by the American Bar Association.
- Certificate of completion of a paralegal program at a postsecondary institution requiring at least 24 semester units in law‑related courses, accredited.
- A bachelor's or advanced degree with one year of law‑related experience under a supervising attorney (active State Bar member for at least 3 years). Written declaration from attorney confirming qualification.
- High school diploma or GED with three years of law‑related experience under a supervising attorney under the same bar requirements; completed by December 31, 2003.
Desired Qualifications
- One year litigation experience as a legal assistant or paralegal, or five+ years as a legal secretary with proof of high‑level duties.
- Excellent verbal and written communication; ability to communicate tactfully with attorneys, court personnel, vendors, and the public.
- Self‑directed and collaborative work habits.
- Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
- Working knowledge of civil legal procedures and court rules.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite; experience with Adobe Pro, Cisco WebEx, Microsoft Teams, TextMap, IPRO Eclipse, CaseMap, Trial Director; Relativity a plus.
- Strong interpersonal skills and a positive attitude.

Salary and Benefits
The position has a five‑step salary scale ranging from $99,840 to $121,316. Benefits include robust health, retirement, and other benefits. Legal Assistants are represented by the International Federation of Professional & Technical Engineers, Local 21.
