The San Francisco City Attorney's Office is seeking an organized and motivated legal assistant to join its Health & Human Services Team.
About the Office
The City Attorney's Office represents the City and County of San Francisco, providing legal services to City officials and departments. We empower City leaders with responsive, innovative legal solutions and promote inclusive advocacy for residents.
About the Health & Human Services Team
The team counsels major Department entities such as Public Health, Homelessness & Supportive Housing, the Medical Examiner office, and others. Work includes drafting contracts, ordinances, motions, investigative documents, and advisory work on policy, litigation, and regulatory matters.
Legal Assistant Position and Responsibilities
- Review and proofread contracts, legislation, pleadings, discovery, subpoenas, memoranda, and correspondence for accuracy.
- Assist with public record requests, third‑party subpoenas, and implementation of litigation holds across City departments.
- Draft and issue subpoenas; prepare privilege logs and manage electronic discovery using IPRO Eclipse, Concordance, CaseMap, TextMap, and other legal software.
- Support the preparation of motions, filings, exhibits, and materials for discovery, hearings, and trials.
- Maintain attorneys' calendars and manage multiple concurrent projects.
- Assist with other projects and duties assigned by the supervising attorney.
Minimum Qualifications
- Compliance with California Business & Professions Code §6450, either with:
- A certified paralegal program approved by the American Bar Association;
- A postsecondary program with a minimum of 24 semester units in law‑related courses, accredited by a national or regional body or approved by the Bureau for Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education; or
- A baccalaureate or advanced degree plus at least one year of law‑related experience under an attorney active in the State Bar of California for the past three years, with a declaration of qualification; or
- A high school diploma plus three years of law‑related experience under a qualified attorney, with a declaration, with completion no later than December 31, 2003.
Desired Qualifications
- One year of litigation or five+ years as a legal secretary demonstrating advanced tasks outlined in Responsibilities.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with attorneys, court personnel, vendors, and the public.
- Strong analytical ability, accurate detail orientation, and initiative in legal research and problem solving.
- Proficiency with civil legal procedures, terminology, and court rules.
- Competence in Microsoft Office, Adobe Professional, Cisco WebEx, Microsoft Teams, TextMap, IPRO Eclipse, CaseMap, Trial Director, or similar tools; experience with Relativity is a plus.
- Positive attitude, teamwork orientation, and commitment to diversity and inclusion.
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

Salary and Benefits
Five‑step salary scale ranging from $99,840 to $121,316. Benefits include health, retirement, and additional City benefits. Legal Assistants are represented by the International Federation of Professional & Technical Engineers, Local 21.
