Automotive Mechanic
Under general supervision, to perform a variety of skilled inspection, diagnosis, maintenance, servicing, and repair work on automobiles, police cars, and emergency equipment; and to do related work as required. Serves as Disaster Service Worker. FLSA Status: Non-exempt. Bargaining Group: Miscellaneous Unit. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS This is an entry and first working level in the Mechanic series. Incumbents perform a variety of skilled maintenance and repair work on City automotive, small engines, landscape maintenance equipment, and emergency equipment. This class is distinguished from Mechanic II in that incumbents are not normally assigned to perform mechanical work on heavy construction equipment, busses, or equipment with hydraulic systems. Incumbents in this class are subject to twenty-four hour "call out." REPORTS TO Public Works Superintendent, Mechanic II, or as assigned. CLASSIFICATIONS SUPERVISED This is not a supervisory class.
Duties may include, but are not limited to:
- Reliable and dependable attendance and punctuality.
- Inspects, locates, and diagnoses mechanical defects on City automotive and emergency equipment.
- Determines extent of necessary repairs.
- Overhauls, repairs, and adjusts transmissions, differentials, clutches, and engines.
- Tunes-up engines, replacing ignition parts and cleaning and adjusting carburetors and fuel injection systems.
- Replaces and repairs faulty parts including wheel bearings, oil seals, shock absorbers, exhaust systems, steering mechanisms, and other components.
- Works on generators, distributors, relays, lights, and switches.
- Changes and installs belts and hoses.
- Changes tires according to seasonal requirements.
- Orders and maintains inventory of requisite parts and supplies.
- Carries out preventive maintenance programs.
- May make field and emergency repairs; installs emergency warning equipment.
- Road tests repaired equipment.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Knowledge of:
- Practices, tools, equipment, and materials used in skilled automotive and equipment maintenance and repair work.
- Operation and care of internal combustion engines and components.
- Small engine repair and maintenance.
- Principles and methods of preventive maintenance.
- Safe work practices and procedures.
- Medium and heavy-duty diesel and hydraulic systems.
Ability to:
- Inspect automotive equipment and accurately diagnose mechanical defects.
- Skillfully use a variety of hand and power tools in the maintenance and repair of automotive equipment.
- Perform skilled testing, adjustment, repair, and overhaul work on automotive equipment.
- Read and interpret shop and repair manuals.
- Apply technical knowledge of mechanical trades work.
- Estimate time and materials for repair jobs.
- Maintain accurate records and reports.
- Maintain appropriate certifications or licenses designated by the City of Atwater.
- Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Make sound decisions and demonstrate intellectual capabilities.
- Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, communicating with others, reading, writing, and operating assigned equipment.
- Learn and follow Department operations, policies, and procedures.
Typical Physical Requirements: Occasionally sit; frequently stand, walk, stoop, kneel, and crouch; normal manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 50 lbs.; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal and written communication; use a variety of hand and power equipment used in the mechanical trades; use a computer and telephone.
Typical Working Conditions: Work is performed in a shop environment; occasionally work outdoors; exposure to smoke, gasses, and fumes; exposure to hazards such as moving machine parts and electrical current; continuous contact with other staff.
Minimum Qualification
- Must be age eighteen (18) by date of appointment.
- Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
- One (1) year of responsible work experience in performing skilled maintenance and repair work on automotive and heavy and light power-driven equipment.
- Possession of a valid California Commercial Class "B" driver's license, or ability to obtain within six (6) months of appointment.
