Ad Platforms & Decisioning Fleet

Ad Platforms is responsible for Disney's industry‑leading ad technology and products, driving advertising performance, innovation, and value across all media platforms. As part of the Decisioning Fleet, you will help build UI tools that analyze competing ad slots for breaks across Hulu, Disney+, ESPN, and others, optimizing ad qualification and selection so viewers always see the right ad at the right time.

Lead Software Engineer (non‑manager)

Apply your deep technical knowledge to deliver scalable, performant, maintainable, loosely coupled, encapsulated, and testable software.

Daily, you should bring:

  • A willingness and desire to effectively communicate and collaborate across teams and systems.
  • Demonstrated project ownership.
  • System and API design experience; best practices to guide and mentor, e.g., micro‑service encapsulation and loose coupling.

  • Ability to translate product requirements into well‑defined technical implementations and to define operational metrics for system health.
  • A keen eye for potential optimizations and enhancements.

  • Deep understanding of Java and front‑end languages and the Software Development Lifecycle.

Responsibilities

  • Holistic understanding of the team's domain and serve as a point of contact for stakeholders.
  • Lead by example, support peers, and improve code and design toward scalable, clean, decoupled implementations.
  • Facilitate discussions and drive resolution, ensuring outcomes are clear and well‑communicated.
  • Design, implement, and test full‑stack solutions for high‑throughput, low‑latency micro‑service environments.
  • Use automated tools (AI) while adhering to company policy.
  • Translate product user stories into actionable tasks and lead the team through execution.
  • Enhance system observability with proper metrics, monitors, and alerts.
  • Participate in on‑call rotations per team's escalation policy and support schedule.

Basic Qualifications

  • BS or MS in Computer Science / Engineering or relevant work experience.
  • 7+ years of software engineering experience.
  • Advanced proficiency with Java, including memory management, multi‑threading, profiling, thread pools, connection pools, and HTTP protocols.
  • Demonstrable analytical / problem‑solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills; strong teamwork ethic with technical and non‑technical audiences.

Experience with

  • SpringBoot and related Spring projects
  • Non‑relational databases like DynamoDB
  • Caching datastores such as Redis, ValKey, or MemCache
  • Data streaming mechanisms such as Apache Kafka and/or Kinesis
  • Cloud platforms such as AWS
  • Modern DevOps tools such as Terraform, Docker, and Kubernetes
  • Micro‑service architecture
  • Front‑end technologies and frameworks such as Node, React, NextJS, Express, Typescript, and Tailwind

Preferred Qualifications

  • Domain knowledge in the Ad Tech industry.

Additional Information

  • Engineers are expected to be in the office four days a week.
  • This role is hiring in San Francisco, Santa Monica, Glendale, or Seattle.

The hiring range for this position in the Los Angeles, CA area is $152,200 – $204,100 per year and in the San Francisco Bay Area is $166,800 – $223,600. The base pay offered will take into account internal equity and may vary depending on geographic region, job‑related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A bonus and/or long‑term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and other benefits, dependent on level and position offered.
