Visiting Researcher, AI Mentorship Program (PhD)
Meta is seeking Visiting Researchers to join Meta AI through a short‑term contract. The program, which lasts one year with the potential to extend into a second year based on performance, is available for PhD students at the University of Washington, Carnegie Mellon University, University of California, Berkeley, or New York University's Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences (CIMS) or Center for Data Science (CDS). Students will collaborate with Meta and their university, working part‑time during the academic school year and full‑time over summer break, and will be expected to work onsite at a Meta office near their university. Applications for the 2026‑27 cohort will be open November 17 to January 9, with the program beginning in fall 2026.
Responsibilities
- Perform research to advance the science and technology of intelligent systems.
- Perform research that improves computational understanding and representation of data.
- Devise data‑driven models of human behavior.
- Influence progress of relevant research communities by producing publications.
- Collaborate and increase productivity on existing Meta research projects.
Minimum Qualifications
- In the process of obtaining a PhD degree in a technical field such as Computer Science from the University of Washington, Carnegie Mellon University, University of California, Berkeley, or New York University's Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences (CIMS) or Center for Data Science (CDS).
- Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience; the degree must be completed prior to joining Meta.
- The primary academic advisor is a tenure‑track or tenured faculty member at one of the universities mentioned above. Meta may, in its discretion, grant an exception where no potential conflict exists.
- Research experience in Computer Vision, Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing, Optimization, Speech, Safety & Alignment, Recommendation Systems, Large Language Models, Retrieval‑Augmented Generation (RAG), Graph/Sequence learning, User/Content Understanding, or Distributed Training.
- Experience with Python, Lua, C++, C, C#, and/or Java.
- Experience with deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch.
- Must obtain work authorization in the country of employment at the time of hire, and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience building systems based on machine learning and/or deep learning methods.
- Research and software engineering experience demonstrated via an internship, work experience, coding competitions, or open‑source contributions.
- Proven track record of achieving significant results as demonstrated by publications at leading conferences or workshops such as ICML, NeurIPS, ICLR, CVPR, ICCV, EMNLP, ACL, or similar.

Compensation & Benefits
Compensation is $56.25/hour to $137,000/year + benefits. Individual compensation is determined by skills, qualifications, experience, and location. The stated rates include only base hourly rate, monthly rate or annual salary; bonuses, equity or sales incentives are not included. In addition to base compensation, Meta offers a comprehensive benefits package.
