The Staff Research Associate II (SRA II) will be a member of a cooperative research effort in the laboratory at UCSF China Basin to (1) develop and validate novel genomic assays for the diagnosis of infectious diseases and (2) analyze host responses by RNA-Seq to discriminate between infectious and non-infectious causes of illness, and (3) use metagenomic next-generation sequencing for pathogen discovery. The SRA II will be working closely with senior postdoctoral fellows and researchers in the laboratory to (1) validate target probe enrichment platforms to diagnose bloodborne infections, (2) develop and benchmark protocols for sequencing library preparation on the pocket-size Min. ION nanopore sequencer (e.g. for sequencing aboard the International Space Station), and (3) use metagenomic sequencing of patient cohorts to discover new viruses and pathogens in humans and in tick samples.
