Location: On-site, Berkeley, CA | Pay: $60/hr (DOE) | Contract: 3 months
Job Description
A Test Equipment Design Engineer (Mechanical) will design and deliver test equipment enabling critical tests across our iron‑air battery systems and supporting hardware. The role focuses on creating custom jigs, fixtures, and handling hardware for mechanical testing of components, PCBAs, and modules, as well as developing air and liquid‑handling test beds for battery energy storage system (BESS) auxiliary system verification.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and deploy custom jigs and fixtures for mechanical testing.
- Develop material handling hardware for lifting, locating, and moving cells and modules.
- Design mechanical packaging for test equipment used in BMS hardware verification, including bench‑level setups, hardware‑in‑the‑loop (HIL) systems, reliability beds, compliance and certification beds.
- Architect and implement air and liquid‑handling test beds for verification testing of BESS auxiliary systems.
- Collaborate with electrical engineers on sensor, actuator, and measurement hardware selection.
- Contribute to software development of test beds, including control, automation, and data acquisition functionality.
- Ensure designs meet safety, reliability, and compliance standards for high‑power and hazardous systems.
- Document test system designs, usage guidelines, and validation procedures.
- Troubleshoot, maintain, and continuously improve deployed test infrastructure.
Qualifications
- BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
- 3+ years of experience in mechanical design and/or test equipment development; battery or energy systems experience is a plus.
- Proficiency with mCAD tools (SolidWorks, NX, etc.).
- Experience working in a manufacturing engineering environment, delivering production‑quality tools and designs.
- Strong understanding of safety and compliance considerations in high‑power and chemical environments.
- Excellent problem‑solving skills, balancing speed, rigor, and safety.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, working cross‑functionally in a fast‑paced environment.
