About the Role

Crunchyroll is growing and changing, presenting unique challenges and opportunities to support millions of anime fans around the world. The Data Engineering team provides seamless help to our internal stakeholders, ensuring an exceptional experience for all Crunchyroll fans.

As a Senior Database Engineer, you will maintain and enhance the reliability of our data infrastructure, directly impacting the availability and performance of our data services. You will collaborate with data engineers and software engineers to develop and drive 100% automation, best practices for deep monitoring and alerting. In this role you will report to the Director of Data Engineering. Positions are located in Los Angeles, CA and San Francisco, CA.

About You

  • You have a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • You have 8+ years of experience in site reliability engineering, database operations, or a related role with a focus on data platforms, data stores, and data operations.
  • You have experience with the AWS cloud platform and its data‑related services.
  • You are proficient in monitoring tools (e.g., Datadog, CloudWatch, DevOps Guru, DB Performance Insights).
  • You are proficient in one or more programming languages (e.g., Python, Java).
  • You have a strong understanding of various performance metrics at both high and low levels (e.g., Disk/IO saturation).
  • You have experience identifying and eliminating bottlenecks in systems.
  • You have a strong understanding of database internals, such as types of indexes, schemas, and query plans.
  • You have a strong understanding of database systems (e.g., SQL, NoSQL) and experience managing large‑scale data infrastructures.
  • At least basic knowledge of automation frameworks (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation).
  • At least basic knowledge and hands‑on implementation of CI/CD pipelines and DataOps practices.
  • You have experience with data governance, compliance, and lifecycle management.
  • You have strong problem‑solving skills and a proactive approach to addressing issues.
  • You can work independently, own projects, and effectively collaborate with the team to influence the vision of the data engineering organization.
  • You have strong communication skills and can mentor and guide junior engineers.

About the Team

The Database Engineering team focuses on ensuring the reliability, scalability, and performance of our data infrastructure. We standardize and implement monitoring and alerting across all datastores, maintain databases, apply Infrastructure as Code for high availability, and drive automation to improve operational efficiency. We advocate for 100% automation, document operational requirements, develop incident response processes, and automate compliance checks to maintain a secure and reliable data environment.

Pay Transparency – San Francisco, CA

Pay range: $193,000 — $241,000 USD. Actual pay will vary based on location, experience and performance.
