Under general direction, the Associate Engineer performs professional engineering work in the field and office and supervises the work of junior and assistant engineers, technicians, inspectors, surveyors and other related personnel engaged in engineering projects.
Essential functions (may vary by assignment): preparing engineering designs, drawings and specifications; preparing cost and quantity estimates for labor, materials and equipment; providing engineering support to operations staff; reviewing existing conditions and conducting studies; identifying, obtaining and analyzing samples and data; analyzing and resolving problems to ensure compliance with regulatory and performance standards; supervising the preparation of drawings, specifications and calculations; assigning and reviewing the work of staff and consultants; determining resources necessary to complete work; reviewing plans, permit applications and specifications; verifying quantities, dimensions, safety requirements and quality of work; preparing and supervising technical reports and other documentation; interviewing, selecting, training, monitoring, evaluating and counseling staff; preparing bid documents; reviewing and analyzing bids; conducting meetings and making presentations. Performs other related duties as required.
1. Three (3) years of verifiable professional engineering experience, of which two (2) years are equivalent to City & County of San Francisco Class 5203 Assistant Engineer or higher.
2. Possession of a current Certificate of Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of California in Civil, Mechanical, Chemical, or Environmental Engineering.

Some positions may require lifting up to 50 pounds; climbing ladders; working in high places and confined spaces; exposure to weather conditions outdoors; bending, sitting and walking for extended periods; and overtime or weekend work as needed.
