Position Overview

Position title: Assistant Professor
Salary range: $107,100–$157,800 (9‑month academic year salary). Off‑scale salary and additional components may be offered to meet competitive conditions.

Position Description

The University of California, Berkeley's Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) seeks a tenure‑track Assistant Professor in the area of materials for a sustainable society, with an expected start date of July 1, 2026. Outstanding candidates should demonstrate the potential to build a world‑class research program focused on addressing important challenges in sustainability and environmental issues, including climate change, full materials lifecycle sustainability, circularity, materials criticality, mining, novel processing, energy conversion, harvesting, and storage.

Candidates are encouraged to explore diverse and non‑traditional experiences in science and engineering, including techno‑economic analysis and data‑driven science. Innovations in this area span the breadth of materials science—from soft to hard matter, inorganic to organic systems, synthesis, processing, characterization, fabrication, and integration.

The department is committed to addressing family and dual‑career partner needs, and welcomes candidates who have taken time off for family or who have achieved excellence outside academia.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required): PhD or equivalent international degree, or enrollment in such a program at the time of application.

Preferred qualifications: Strong commitment to education, supportive teaching and research environment, mentorship of students, and service to campus and the materials science and engineering profession worldwide.
