Compensation Range: $60,431.00 - $84,603.00

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.

Responsibilities: Manages and improves the Empire Discovery Institute (EDI)'s business finances and works with the EDI team to help develop a long-term strategy toward financial independence from New York State funding needs. Working closely with the EDI CEO and staff, EDI's Scientific Advisory Board and Board of Directors, assists with the management of programs from EDI's partner Institutions at the University of Rochester (UR), University at Buffalo (UB) and Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center (RPCCC), and collaborates with those partners to ensure timely invoicing, payments and strong business operations.

Essential Functions:

  • Manages and processes all business transactions and monitors cash flow, budget projections, and makes recommendations for business improvement.
  • Develops the annual budget, ensures spending remains within allocated resources, and tracks actual versus anticipated spend.
  • Makes projections for future budget periods.
  • Handles payments of invoices to consultants, vendors, and external contract research organizations.
  • Partners with external accounting and audit firms to ensure compliance.
  • Implements EDI's program investments with the CEO and Board members.
  • Finds efficient solutions to timeline delays and adapts research plans.
  • Creates Statements of Work (SOWs) and aligns budgets accordingly.
  • Coordinates payments to partners.
  • Prepares quarterly statements of financial status for the EDI Board.
  • Completes annual audits and issues tax forms.
  • Coordinates with the EDI Treasurer to ensure proper checks/balances.
  • Provides reports and accounting to stakeholders at Empire State Development (ESD).
  • Tracks funding requirements and submits requests for support.
  • Compiles documents for audit purposes.

Minimum Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business Administration, or equivalent; Required
  • Master's Degree Preferred
  • 5 years of professional accounting experience; Required
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience; Required
  • Experience at an educational institution, healthcare system, or biopharmaceutical company; Preferred
  • Budget creation, tracking, and management experience; Preferred
  • Coordination of invoice payments via online banking system; Required
  • Management of tax documents such as W9 forms, 1099s, and similar; Preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to track expenditures, payments, and invoicing with attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of financial management, departmental or company invoicing, payments, and tracking.
  • Positive attitude and ability to seek solutions to challenges.
  • Experience with Excel, QuickBooks, and related financial tracking software.
  • Exceptional communication skills with the ability to inspire confidence.
  • Strong interpersonal and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with leaders as a strategic partner.
  • Ability to establish and maintain credibility with internal and external partners.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) preferred
