Job Description

The Discovery Virology group is looking for a highly motivated Postdoctoral Scientist to lead innovative interdisciplinary research in virology and neurobiology. This position offers an opportunity to dissect the molecular mechanisms linking neurotropic herpesvirus infection with Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will initiate and lead an independent research project to investigate how the reactivation of alpha‑herpesviruses in neuronal cells contributes to AD‑associated pathology. This will involve examining the interplay between viral replication, host genetic factors, and neuroinflammatory responses, including the following:

  • Develop and optimize human iPSC‑derived neurons for HSV‑1 latency and reactivation.
  • Engineer isogenic iPSC lines using CRISPR/Cas9.
  • Establish a neuronal‑microglia co‑culture system to study neuroinflammatory responses.
  • Apply transcriptomic, proteomic, and/or epigenomic profiling to identify pathways involved with virally induced AD pathology.

The postdoctoral scientist will be expected to publish their work in top‑tier journals and present at scientific conferences. The selected candidate will work in a highly collaborative environment at Gilead through a 3‑year fixed term, with access to world‑class research facilities and the opportunity to leverage expertise and resources across multiple functional areas.

Basic Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in molecular biology, neuroscience, virology, immunology, or a related field.
  • At least one first author paper published or accepted in a peer‑reviewed journal.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communications skills and strong organizational skills are required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with neuronal cell culture is strongly preferred.
  • Expertise in viral infections, molecular biology, microscopy, CRISPR/Cas9, and omics‑based approaches is an advantage.

People Leader Accountabilities

  • Create Inclusion – knowing the business value of diverse teams, modeling inclusion, and embedding the value of diversity in the way they manage their teams.
  • Develop Talent – understand the skills, experience, aspirations and potential of their employees and coach them on current performance and future potential. They ensure employees are receiving the feedback and insight needed to grow, develop and realize their purpose.
  • Empower Teams – connect the team to the organization by aligning goals, purpose, and organizational objectives, and holding them to account. They provide the support needed to remove barriers and connect their team to the broader ecosystem.

The salary range for this position is: $126,820.00 - $164,120.00. Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may be eligible for paid time off and a benefits package. Benefits MAY include company‑sponsored medical, dental, vision, and life insurance plans*.
