Facilities Services works to continuously improve the campus in partnership with all members of the university community to ensure that classrooms, laboratories, and offices support teaching, learning and research. With over 500 dedicated staff members serving over 10 M building square feet and 1100 acres, Facilities Services includes the asset management program, custodial services, maintenance operations, engineering and technical services, environmental services, grounds operations, and the Cal Zero Waste program.

The Engineering and Technical Services unit of Facilities Services helps develop the vision, strategy, incentives, and initiatives that align operations, planning and design processes, and resource management with the principles of sustainability. The Civil Engineer serves as the resident expert and project manager with respect to the campus's water, sewer and storm drain distribution systems and advises on utility distributions.

Responsibilities

  • Functions as Facilities Services project engineer (civil/structural) for campus‑wide water, sewer and storm distribution systems for major construction projects.
  • Serves as engineering liaison to coordinate communications between chief architects, chief engineers and engineering staff members and Facilities Services Utilities Operations Plumbing Shop.
  • Coordinates all or most segments of a project from inception to completion.
  • Functions as design engineer (civil/structural) for projects of limited scope such as small buildings, structures, and utility, drainage and road systems.
  • Prepares funding request lists for Utility Operations Plumbing Shop.
  • Provides technical consulting on water, sewer and storm drain metering on existing and new meters.
  • Provides professional engineering information and advice to committees regarding building needs and priorities for limited‑scope projects.
  • Manages the annual water survey for EBMUD.
  • Reviews engineering design development and construction documents for compliance with campus programs and policies.
  • Maintains campus‑wide water, sewer and storm distribution maps.
  • Analyzes and improves design, operation and maintenance of civil/structural and utility systems.
  • Serves as technical reference for trades groups requiring field support.
  • Provides input for Campus Design Standards.
  • Performs plan review and follow‑up on recommendations for projects connecting to campus water, sewer and storm drain systems.
  • Prepares water, storm and sewer capacity studies and presents recommendations to PM.
  • Participates in project meetings with PM, consultants and contractors.
  • Represents Facilities Services on projects and to EBMUD and EH&S.
  • Resolves problems or conflicts in civil and structural engineering expertise, recommending solutions to disputed issues.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience with engineering flow/hydraulic principals and software modeling systems such as EPANET, KYPipe, SewerGEMS; ability to develop or update models.
  • At least 10 years of experience in utility distribution operations & maintenance and/or design.
  • Expert written, verbal, and interpersonal skills, including political acumen and negotiation skills.
  • Expert knowledge of design and construction, contract administration and California Building Codes.
  • Expert project management skills to manage highly complex projects.
  • Expert skill in building, maintaining, and nurturing professional relationships.
  • Expert knowledge in civil/structural engineering.
  • Advanced knowledge of campus infrastructure, regulations, policies, and strategic plans.
  • Expert analytical, organizational, project management, and problem‑recognition skills.
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil/Structural Engineering from an accredited school or equivalent experience/training.
  • State of California Professional Engineering license; current and clear PE license.

Salary & Benefits

Annual salary range: $134,200.00 – $186,000.00. Full‑time, Career position eligible for full UC benefits; exempt, monthly‑paid.
