Job Description

Position: Stationary Engineer, Sewage Plant (journey-level). Under general supervision, incumbents function as plant operators and/or plant mechanics in a wastewater treatment setting. Responsibilities include operating and maintaining a wide variety of complex machinery and equipment, conducting routine inspections, maintaining logs, and ensuring safety and compliance with regulatory permits.

• Makes regular visual, audio, olfactory and tactile inspections and/or manual tests of plant machinery and equipment; maintain logs and records of maintenance and work orders; read gauges and meters to ensure safe and efficient plant operation.
• Perform manual tasks involving equipment exposed to raw sewage; collect and assess raw sewage and chemical samples; ensure compliance with NPDES permits.
• Operate, inspect, maintain, repair, and overhaul pumping, heating, ventilating, process machinery and equipment in a wastewater plant or pumping station; lubricate and clean equipment and facilities.
• Inspect pipelines, tanks and gates for condition, infiltration, blockages and mineral buildup; monitor pressure and flow indicators.
• Operate and maintain solids treatment and flocculating chemical systems; monitor flow indicators and analyze samples for optimum treatment.
• Operate disinfection and dechlorination systems; test and adjust chemical dosages to meet discharge requirements.
• May assist in training and supervising apprentices or trainees in operation and maintenance of sewage treatment processes.
• Perform duties as listed in the Stationary Engineer, Sewage Plant class specification as referenced by DHR (where applicable).

Qualifications

1. Experience: Four (4) years of verifiable journey-level Stationary Engineer, Plant Operator and/or Plant Mechanic experience in operation, maintenance and repair of wastewater treatment plant machinery; OR completion of a recognized four-year Stationary Engineer Apprenticeship Program; OR graduation from a recognized four-year Maritime Academy with an Engineering or Technology degree; OR possession of at least a 3rd Assistant Marine Engineer's License of unrestricted horsepower; OR possession of an FAA Airframe or Powerplant Certificate with four years of related experience.

2. License and Certification: Possession of a valid driver's license; AND Grade I or higher California Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certificate or Grade I or higher California Water Environment Mechanical Technology Certificate. Desirable qualifications may include higher level certificates and experience in wastewater treatment.
