Overview
NELSON is seeking a Technical Designer III to join the Civic & Justice Practice. The role focuses on developing construction documents, utilizing creativity, foresight, and judgment to meet project requirements and objectives through project completion. Candidates should have strong Revit and AutoCAD skills, presentation skills, and experience with conceptual design.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the Project Manager in establishing project goals, workplan, schedule, and budget parameters.
- Lead and manage the design process for moderately complex projects, supporting larger complex projects under supervision.
- Contribute to fee proposal development and innovative design concepts that are practical, aesthetic, and safe.
- Specify materials, products, and architectural systems.
- Maintain positive client relationships throughout the project.
- Assist with subcontracting and coordination of sub-consultant work.
- Serve as team lead to keep the project on schedule in conjunction with the Project Manager.
- Coordinate with other disciplines, vendors, and contractors to incorporate all information into project requirements.
- Lead the Construction Administration phase, responding to RFIs, COs, reviewing shop drawings, and participating in field site reviews.
- Ensure project documentation complies with NELSON standards.
- Assist with fee negotiations and sub‑contract negotiations.
- Develop solutions to technical and design problems following established standards.
- Prepare 2D and 3D presentation/design drawings.
- Conduct research and compile data during project phases.
- Prepare interior architectural documents (elevations, sections, details, etc.).
- Support client assessment and document support.
- Lead design charrettes and project team meetings.
- Manage timesheet and expense reports accurately.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Architectural Drafting, or related field.
- 8+ years of experience in architecture.
- Highly proficient in both Revit and AutoCAD.
- Must be deadline‑oriented with strong attention to detail.
- Experience in Justice and Civic building typologies is strongly preferred (e.g., correction facilities, prisons, detention centers, courthouses, police/fire stations, public works buildings).
- Familiarity with Photoshop and/or InDesign preferred.
Required Knowledge & Skills
- Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines while providing high‑quality client service.
- Advanced knowledge of design trends, construction methodology, material application, and manufacturer–supplier relationships.
- Advanced knowledge of furniture, fixture, FF&E, interior finishes, lighting, art signage, color, and materials.
- Advanced knowledge of sustainability, integrated design, and LEED guidelines.
- Advanced knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles for precision technical plans.
- Highly proficient in Revit and AutoCAD; basic proficiency in Deltek Vision/Vantagepoint.
- Proficiency in Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign graphic software preferred.
- Ability to organize and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines.
Salary Range
$60,000 – $95,000, contingent upon relevant experience. Additional compensation includes bonuses and benefits.
