Job Description

As a Mechanical Design Engineer at GRI, you will work with a team to develop novel, multi-sensor systems for real-time, 3D radiation mapping. You will provide mechanical engineering expertise in design of new products, refining existing designs, meeting thermal/mechanical design requirements and maintaining documentation. This role will support GRI demonstrations to end-customers. GRI is looking for candidates with a continuous improvement mindset, seeking impact in emerging markets, and able to work independently and collaboratively with team members from different technical backgrounds.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Design hardware for multisensor systems that integrate custom electronics
  • Build rugged systems for 3D mapping in nuclear/radiological environments
  • Conceptualize, prototype and maintain modular component designs & documentation
  • Identify and select materials & components appropriate for robust prototype production
  • Optimize thermal management of electronic and computer units in handheld, UAS/UGV, and vehicle-mounted systems
  • Create and manage designs, specifically for robustness, and facilitate field testing

Required qualifications

  • Growth & continuous learning mindset
  • 5+ years of mechanical CAD experience with Solidworks
  • Proven design and testing experience to meet industry-standard environmental and reliability ratings (e.g., MIL-STD, Ingress Protection) for mission-critical hardware
  • Experience designing and shipping a product
  • Experience integrating sensors, such as cameras, LiDARs, GPS, etc.
  • B.S. or M.S. in mechanical engineering or related field

Bonus Skills and Experience

  • Experience with programming, including Python and C++
  • Experience with radiation detection or a willingness and interest to learn
  • Experience with robotics design
