Position Summary
Under the direct supervision of the Controller, the Senior Accountant is responsible for the day‑to‑day accounting duties of the Finance and Accountability Department, including accounts receivable, billing and collections, cash receipts, grants accounting, audits, and revenue recognition for gifts and contributions. The role also supports fundraising staff and may be cross‑trained in back‑up payments and disbursements.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Prepares daily deposit fundraising batches and inputs daily onto Intacct Fund Accounting.
- Prepares daily collection deposits from funding agencies and monitors outstanding contracts receivable.
- Reasonably estimates and posts in‑kind contributions monthly.
- Maintains contracts and grant agreements as directed by the Controller.
- Maintains log‑ins and administrative access to government contract online billings and fiscal compliance reporting.
- Prepares and processes monthly grant claims/invoices timely, 10th of each month.
- Maintains state of audit readiness for financial audits and other grantor site visits, supporting the Controller with all external audits and desk reviews.
- Reviews, codes, posts revenue and bank EFT transactions.
- Performs month‑end closing activities, ensuring all receipts are deposited, posted and coded accordingly by the 5th of each month.
- Assists in financial record‑keeping, year‑end closing of accounting books and contracts including reconciliation of government contracts revenue.
- Analyzes accounts receivable aging and recommends adjustments or write‑offs.
- Participates in ongoing staff training, improvement training, and webinars.
- Completes special projects assigned by the Controller as needed.
- Other duties as assigned by the Controller.
Minimum Qualifications
- 3–5 years of accounting experience with increasing responsibility, preferably in a nonprofit serving underserved populations.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Business Administration preferred (Associate degree or certificate acceptable).
- Proficiency with fund accounting software packages, preferably Sage Intacct.
- Ability to independently manage high‑volume workloads, multiple stakeholders' demands, and shifting priorities.
- Understanding of government contracts and foundation grants.
- Ability to work well under pressure and manage stress effectively in a demanding and fast‑paced environment.
- Strong analytical and project‑management skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Strong proactive sense of initiative and follow‑through; ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Excellent organizational and planning abilities.
Key Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
- Experience with County and City of San Francisco, CA Dept of Education, USDA or US Dept of Health contractual obligations a plus.
- Knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles, fund accounting methods, GAAP, and fiscal accountability and compliance.
- Knowledge of double‑entry bookkeeping principles and practices and adherence to sound internal control.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and with multi‑tab spreadsheets using complex formulas and functions.
- Salesforce experience is a plus.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work on a computer and see details of objects at close range.
- Ability to hear within normal range and communicate effectively (in person, telephone or Zoom).
- Finger dexterity and ability to use all standard office equipment.
- Sit or stand comfortably, and navigate throughout office spaces (via elevator or stairs).
Compensation & Employment
Salaried at $87,000 – $92,000 per year. This is a full‑time (40 hour/week), exempt position located in the Tenderloin neighborhood of San Francisco, CA.
