Law Librarian - Library Team - City Attorney's Office

The San Francisco City Attorney's Office is looking for a qualified and motivated law librarian to join our Office. The Law Librarian is an integral part of the City Attorney's Office, providing research services and training to support the legal work of attorneys and professional staff across all practice teams. The position manages all aspects of the library's administrative work including prioritizing resources within the budget, managing the budget, acquisitions, serials control, collection maintenance, contract negotiations, and invoice processing.

  • Develops and manages the law library annual budget.
  • Manages overall library resources to prioritize and meet the legal research needs of the Office within the Library's available budget. Evaluates usage of current library resources, evaluates alternate resources with an emphasis on digitizing resources, and makes recommendations for renewal of existing materials or purchase of alternate resources.
  • Conducts research for employees in a timely and effective manner. Advises attorneys and professional staff on research strategy and resource selection to ensure research is accurate and conducted in the most efficient and cost-effective manner.
  • Trains employees in using information resources; develops, prepares and conducts presentations, including in-person, hybrid, web enabled trainings and asynchronous; prepares and updates guides, newsletters, and intranet pages on library services and information resources.
  • Negotiates contracts for library resources, with assistance as needed from an assigned Deputy. Manages library contracts. Orders new materials and handles renewals.
  • Provides employee onboarding to library services, including establishing employee accounts for Office subscriptions.
  • Manages physical resources, including checking in and processing library materials, updating loose-leaf filing, and shelving library materials.
  • Manages desk copy surveys, orders, and distribution.
  • Routes print and electronic newsletters.
  • Processes invoices.
  • May collaborate on Office knowledge management initiatives and tools, including generative AI tools.
  • May supervise other library personnel.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master of Library Science (M.L.S.), Master of Library and Information Science (M.L.I.S.) or equivalent degree from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited school; AND/OR Juris Doctor degree (J.D.) from an American Bar Association (ABA) accredited law school
  • Three months of experience working as a law librarian.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Two or more years of experience working as a law librarian in a law firm setting.
  • Three or more years of experience in library vendor management, acquisitions, cataloging, and technical services.
  • Knowledge of WESTLAW, LEXIS, internet legal resources and/or other on-line databases and software applications.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and other web-based information delivery services.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Collaborative, with a commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment.
  • Strong customer service orientation.
  • Responsible and reliable, with strong organizational skills and an aptitude for performing functions requiring a high degree of accuracy and careful attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks and deadlines, and prioritize and complete multiple assignments.
  • Proactively stays current on new products and services, evaluates and recommends new resource and products.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift boxes up to 25 pounds, crouch and reach to reshelve items, and push/pull a wheeled cart loaded with books.

Salary and Benefits:

The position has a 5-step salary scale ranging from $125,528 to $152,516. The successful applicant is appointed to a salary step based on years of experience and additional relevant degrees, certifications, credentials or skills. The City offers robust health, retirement and other benefits.
