Pokémon GO is a first‑party development studio within Niantic. As a client developer you will work on client features that make the Pokémon GO experience responsive and engaging. You will collaborate with server engineers, game designers and other stakeholders to create new gameplay features, perform load and performance testing, write unit tests, conduct troubleshooting and contribute to engineering best practices.

Responsibilities

  • Build engaging features on the Unity game client.
  • Debug sophisticated projects built on Unity.
  • Perform load and performance testing, participate in code reviews, write unit tests, and conduct troubleshooting to ensure uptime for live systems.
  • Work together with Game Designers to design and develop game features for Pokémon GO.
  • Work closely with Pokémon GO server engineers to ensure solutions are high quality and scalable.
  • Ensure the Niantic engineering organization constantly improves its development best practices.
  • Mentor junior client engineers on technical solutions.
  • Operate directly with studio engineering managers and partner platform teams.
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional team members and stakeholders, including regular, reliable attendance and participation in meetings.
  • Required in‑office 2 days/week (Wednesday, Thursday).

Qualifications

  • BS in Computer Science or another technical major, or equivalent experience.
  • Published at least one mobile app to an app store (iOS or Google).
  • Proficiency in multiple programming languages: C# for Unity, Java for Android, Objective‑C for iOS, and C/C++ for mobile native.
  • 1+ year of professional software development experience or equivalent.
  • Ability to work in a fast‑paced hybrid environment, handle stress, and solve practical problems with little advance notice.
  • Experience working on cross‑functional teams and effective written and verbal communication.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with AAA game engines (Unreal, Unity, Lumberyard, Frostbite, etc.) or proprietary engines.
  • Work experience with Unity on mobile devices (Android and iOS).
  • 3D game engine experience, particularly in Unity3D.
  • Experience in optimization, systems architecture, profiling, tooling, and reporting.
  • Experience profiling and optimizing for mobile.

Compensation & Benefits

The total compensation package for this position includes a new‑hire offer base salary range of $150,500–$176,000. In addition to base pay, employees may be eligible for bonuses and a comprehensive benefits package. Individual pay within this salary range is determined by work location and additional factors, including assessed job‑related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
