Staff Electrical Engineer

2025-10-30     Foundation Robotics Labs     San Francisco,CA
Description:

Our mission is to create advanced robots that can operate in complex environments, reducing human risk in conflict zones and enhancing efficiency in labor-intensive industries.

We are on the lookout for extraordinary engineers and scientists to join our team. Your previous experience in robotics isn't a prerequisite — it's your talent and determination that truly count.

We expect that many of our team members will bring diverse perspectives from various industries and fields. We are looking for individuals with a proven record of exceptional ability and a history of creating things that work.

All positions are based in San Francisco.

Our Culture

We like to be frank and honest about who we are, so that people can decide for themselves if this is a culture they resonate with. Please read more about our culture here

Who should join:

  • You deeply believe that this is the most important mission for humanity and needs to happen yesterday.
  • You are highly technical - regardless of the role you are in. We are building technology; you need to understand technology well.
  • You care about aesthetics and design inside out. If it's not the best product ever, it bothers you, and you need to “fix” it.
  • You don't need someone to motivate you; you get things done.

Why We Are Hiring for This Role:

  • Lead the compute team in architecting and developing the onboard compute systems for our humanoid robot, Phantom.
  • Design and build custom compute boards that integrate high-performance processing, AI accelerators, and interfaces for actuators, sensors, and perception systems (no custom chip design required at this stage, but expertise in board-level customization is essential).
  • Ensure seamless integration of compute hardware with real-time communication protocols, power management, and embedded controls to support AI-driven robotics.
  • Optimize compute architecture for performance, efficiency, and reliability, scaling from prototypes to production while balancing cost and safety.
  • Collaborate closely with AI, software, mechanical, and electrical teams to deliver a fully integrated system.

What Kind of Person We Are Looking For:

  • Proven leadership experience in building and managing compute-focused teams, with a track record of delivering custom hardware solutions.
  • Deep expertise in designing custom compute boards, including high-speed digital circuits, memory interfaces, and integration with off-the-shelf processors and accelerators.
  • Strong background in embedded systems, power electronics, and real-time architectures for robotics, automotive, or high-performance computing applications.
  • Expert in PCB design, signal integrity, thermal management, and fault-tolerant systems for compute hardware.
  • Familiarity with communication protocols (e.g., PCIe, Ethernet, CAN) and interfaces for AI and sensor data processing.
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex compute systems using tools like oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and simulation software.
  • Experience scaling compute hardware from prototyping to mass production, with a focus on optimization and reliability.
  • A hands‑on leader who excels in fast‑paced, interdisciplinary environments and drives innovation in compute for robotics.
  • 10+ years experience in electrical engineering, compute hardware, robotics, automotive, aerospace, or similar fields.
  • Bachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechatronics, or related field. PhD is a plus.
  • We provide market standard benefits (health, vision, dental, 401k, etc.). Join us for the culture and the mission, not for the benefits.
  • The annual compensation is expected to be between $80,000 - $1,000,000. Exact compensation may vary based on skills, experience, and location.
