Job Description

Gilead's mission is to discover, develop, and deliver therapies that will improve the lives of patients with life-threatening illnesses worldwide.

We are seeking a visionary Director, Data Science, to lead high-impact, cross-functional initiatives across therapeutic areas that drive strategic value and innovation throughout the organization. This role will partner with diverse stakeholders and data science peers to establish best practices, streamline operations, and deliver measurable improvements in driving business performance, team efficiency, and cost optimization.

This role reports to the Sr. Director, Marketing Sciences and may be based in Parsippany (NJ), or Foster City (CA).

The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in healthcare data and a strong track record of applying advanced analytics and AI/ML techniques to inform decision-making and improve patient outcomes. This leader will drive initiatives such as: defining and implementing best practices in data science across teams and TAs; championing scalable, reusable solutions that accelerate insight generation and operational excellence; lead cross-TA and cross-functional data science initiatives including advancing cross-functional collaborations on initiatives like the Medical Digital Assistant, HCP to account mapping, stigma measurement, and more.

Success in this role requires a strategic mindset, technical depth, and the ability to influence and align stakeholders across functions to shape the future of data science within the enterprise. Hands-on functional expertise, highly collaborative mindset and leadership skillsets required.


Responsibilities:

  • Be a partner in driving the industrialization of predictive sciences to help understand the patient journey and triggers robustly for markets.
  • Understand Gilead's commercial business objectives, develop and deploy scalable data science products and insights to influence decisions in marketing, sales, medical and etc.
  • Lead data science projects end to end including converting unstructured business questions into data science solutions, provide guidance to offshore teams, be a hands-on leader who codes and debugs, and communicates with stakeholders.
  • Foster a culture of measurement and impact and incorporate feedback to continuously improve data science models.
  • Bring thought leadership and thorough understanding of statistics to construct robust propensity models for impactful commercial use.
  • Create data science products that can be refreshed, reproduced and replicated.
  • Work with other data scientists to define retraining schedules and measure propensity models for impact.
  • Partner with global teams to cross-pollinate ideas and replicate successful models from other countries and vice versa.
  • Communicate effectively and abstract backend complexity where it is not needed.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree and Twelve Years' Experience OR Master's Degree and Ten Years' Experience OR PhD and Eight Years' Experience
  • Strong working knowledge of machine learning algorithms, including regression, clustering, neural networks, Bayesian models, RNN, CNN, tree-based algorithms (RF, XGBoost, LightGBM), SMOTE, etc.
  • Experience in building, implementing and using AI-based solutions with proven business impact
  • Strong leadership capable of managing initiatives end-to-end
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills


Preferred Experience:

  • Experience in implementing and optimizing AI-based solutions with proven business impact
  • Experience with pharma/consumer data types and sources (e.g., patient claims, Xponent, Plantrak, sales, activity)
  • Expertise in pharma datasets (IQVIA, Symphony, Komodo, Optum, Definitive Health, Health Verity, EMR/HER)
  • Expertise in Python with common data science libraries (numpy, pandas, scikit-learn, seaborn, networkx)
  • Experience with data science techniques (ANCOVA, Bayesian statistics, econometric modeling, neural networks/logistic)
  • Cloud technologies/tools (Databricks, S3, etc.)
  • Experience designing measurement solutions in visualization software (Tableau preferred)
  • Demonstrated product mindset and familiarity with product management principles
  • Strong teamwork, inclusivity, and cross-functional collaboration
  • Understanding of emerging data science capabilities and their pharma/healthcare applications
  • Understanding of datasets strengths/limitations and acceptable error ranges by therapeutic space
  • Advanced degree with related experience or significant relevant analytics experience

The salary range for this position is: Bay Area: $226,185.00 - $292,710.00; Other US Locations: $205,615.00 - $266,090.00.

Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives, paid time off, and a benefits package. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, and life insurance plans.
