About the role

Samsara's Hardware Reliability team enables an exceptional customer experience by enabling reliable hardware, identifying opportunities in product performance, and engaging cross-functionally to resolve key issues. The Senior Hardware Reliability Engineer will design quality processes that guarantee the high‑quality standards of Samsara's hardware and implement comprehensive reliability strategies and plans that span the entire product development lifecycle from concept to warranty repair. The role aggregates and analyzes test, field performance, and manufacturing data to drive actions internally and with suppliers to ensure we build the highest quality product. Cross‑functional collaboration with hardware, firmware, and operations teams is essential.

This is a hybrid position open to candidates residing in the US, requiring visits to our office in San Francisco 3 times a week.

In this role, you will:

  • Work cross‑functionally with partners in Hardware/Firmware Engineering, Operations, and Support to ensure our customers have a best‑in‑class product experience.
  • Design in reliability through the product development process and own product reliability modeling, testing, and validation.
  • Set reliability requirements and allocate reliability targets to subsystems.
  • Lead product quality investigations in addition to root cause and corrective actions with internal cross‑functional team members and external vendors.
  • Evaluate and investigate defect trends that improve incoming material and outgoing product quality.
  • Identify opportunities for corrective actions and continuous improvement through field failure investigations.
  • Create feedback loops to continuously improve the products in the field and the next generation.
  • Champion, role‑model, and embed Samsara's cultural principles (Focus on Customer Success, Build for the Long Term, Adopt a Growth Mindset, Be Inclusive, Win as a Team) as we scale globally and across new offices.

Minimum requirements for the role

  • MSc or PhD in Engineering, Material Science, Physics, or a related field.
  • Experience with stress testing, including fatigue, vibration, shock, electrical, and environmental stress.
  • Experience with failure analysis methodologies.
  • Understanding of the physics of failure and application of stresses to underlying failure mechanisms.
  • Experience with Design for Reliability concepts.
  • Experience with hardware reliability tests, third‑party test oversight, and test execution.
  • Self‑motivated, proactive, creative, and critical problem‑solving capabilities.

Compensation Philosophy

Our compensation program delivers Total Direct Compensation that is at or above market. The role's base salary ranges from $133,577.50 – $224,500 USD, plus bonus/variable and restricted stock unit awards (RSUs). Additional RSU refresh grants may be awarded annually.
