Overview

Oakland Rising (OR), a fiscally sponsored 501(c3) project of the Center for Empowered Politics Education Fund, is a collaboration of social justice organizations that have a long-term, shared vision for winning a community-based political infrastructure and governing majority in Oakland that centers racial, economic, and environmental justice. Oakland Rising Action, a fiscally sponsored 501(c4) project of the Center for Empowered Politics, is a community-led political organization focused on supporting candidates and issues that advance a progressive agenda for Oakland's working class, immigrants and communities of color living in the flatlands of Oakland. We are a multilingual, multiracial collaborative with deep roots in Deep East Oakland's neighborhoods, proving that everyday residents working together have the power to change the way our city is run. With longtime Oakland families and our newest neighbors working shoulder to shoulder, we are building on Oakland's rich history to advance smart, community-first solutions for a thriving Town.

This position is shared with our sister entity Oakland Rising Action Fund, a separate 501(c)4.

The Position

We're seeking people to join our exciting campaign advancing economic, racial, and environmental justice in East Oakland! We are building a team of social justice advocates to educate and mobilize residents around why we need to vote now more than ever, and important local fights coming our way in this special election season. Sharing this information and getting to know our Oakland communities more deeply will prepare us to win on regional and state-wide issues.

We are currently seeking to fill positions for Voter Outreach Workers. Voter Outreach Workers will be responsible for contacting thousands of voters by phone and through door-to-door canvassing.

This is a temporary hourly part-time job from March 10th through April 15th. Workers will work 5 days a week (Sunday-Thursday) for 4.5 hours per day, 3:30pm-8:30pm.

The Voter Outreach Worker reports directly to the Outreach Worker Lead & IVE Manager

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Talk to dozens of people daily about issues facing voters through door-to-door canvassing and phone banking.
  • Enter data you collect from people using a computer and tablet with a keyboard or touch screen.
  • Complete accurate daily reports and debriefs
  • Openness and dedication to learn about current political issues

Minimum Requirements:
  1. Must be reliable and committed to working every day of the assignment. This means 4.5 hours per day, five days a week. All Outreach Workers will be assigned to both phone banking and canvassing door-to-door during the campaign
  2. Ability to walk for at least 3 hours daily to canvass door-to-door. Outreach Worker will need to walk one precinct a day, which is approximately 10-12 city blocks
  3. Strong verbal communication skills with the ability to talk clearly and concisely to hundreds of people a day about issues facing our communities
  4. Ability to read, memorize, and deliver a page-long script in English
  5. Ability to enter data into a computer and laptop using a keyboard or touchscreen, while door-to-door canvassing and phone banking
  6. Shared values with Oakland Rising dedicated to racial, economic, and environmental justice
  7. Exceptional interpersonal skills
  8. Able to reach personal goals
  9. Positive attitude, team player, and interest in leadership development
  10. Basic computer skills
  11. Ability to fill out accurate daily reports


Preferred but not required:
  • Previous experience working on a campaign with a community organization, doing sales, or customer service
  • Bilingual English-Spanish or English-Cantonese
  • Familiarity with East and West Oakland

EMPLOYMENT TERMS:

This position has a rate of $28/hour. This position is non-exempt and temporary.

STIPENDS (attendance dependent): $5 daily technology stipend provided when door-to-door canvassing if using one's phone.

MILEAGE REIMBURSEMENT: Available for Outreach Workers who are able to use their personal cars for work. Does not include miles commuting to work.

Work Environment / Physical Demands

For walks: this position requires walking for at least 3 hours daily to canvass door-to-door. Outreach Worker will need to walk one precinct a day, which is approximately 10-12 city blocks

For phonebank: this position requires sitting and talking on the phone for an extended period (45 mins at a time for three hours)

All Outreach Workers will be required to do both walks and phonebank shifts.
