Division Description

The Power Enterprise Division supplies clean, renewable electricity to San Francisco residents and businesses through Hetch Hetchy Power and CleanPowerSF. It also manages street and pedestrian lighting.

Role Description

Under general direction, the 5241 Electrical Engineer works in the Distribution Engineering group, performing engineering tasks and assignments related to electric service interconnections. The group focuses on customer service and resolving technical and contractual issues.

The grid‑planning engineer will design, analyze, and optimize SFPUC's owned electric utility grids, requiring expertise in power analysis, capital improvement planning, and system coordination studies, including arc‑flash reporting.

Ideal candidates have a strong background in electrical engineering with a focus on electric utilities and system coordination.

Project name: Grid Planning and AnalysisEssential Functions
  • Create and maintain SFPUC's electric system models.
  • Perform engineering analysis of requested interconnections to SFPUC's infrastructure.
  • Provide good customer service; clearly communicate grid requirements with stakeholders.
  • Keep records and track interconnection agreements (solar, grid, etc.).
  • Perform power‑quality investigations, site assessments, and field inspections.
  • Prepare analysis, planning, and engineering design documents, cost estimates, and construction drawings for customer interconnection to the City‑owned electric distribution system.
  • Assure compliance with utility practices, codes, and standards.
  • Provide technical assistance and operational guidance for maintenance of existing transmission and distribution systems.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Working Relationships

The position will not supervise people initially, but may assist with supervising classes 5207, 5203, and 5201 when workload increases. It will also work with other Power Enterprise divisions.

Nature Of The Work

The grid‑connections engineer integrates new interconnection projects into SFPUC's owned and operated electrical system, performing tasks such as:

  • Grid feasibility studies: evaluate voltage levels, fault currents, and capacity constraints.
  • Interconnection design: design the interface between customer equipment and the grid.
  • Regulatory compliance: ensure proposals meet national grid codes, utility requirements, and safety regulations.
  • System planning: periodically review aggregate load and plan system improvements.
How To QualifyExperience and Training Guidelines
  • Five (5) years of verifiable professional electrical engineering work experience, including at least two (2) years equivalent to the 5207 Associate Engineer level or higher.
  • Possession of a California Professional Engineer license in electrical engineering.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of power system analysis (load flow, fault level, stability).
  • Familiarity with grid codes and interconnection standards (IEC, IEEE, PG&E).
  • Protection systems, SCADA, and automation knowledge.
  • Proficiency in power system simulation tools such as SKM PowerTools or ETAP.
  • Experience in renewable interconnections.
